Knives you wanted as a kid ?

Big trouble in little china really made me want Jack Burton's boot knife, I think it was a Gerber Mark 1? Closest I came was picking up one of the Smith and Wesson $15 dollar boot knives that were on sale in pretty much every PX back while I was in the military. Never used it to slay any centuries old evil sorcerers but it did a fine job of slicing open MRE's.

Yes lots of kids carried pocket knives for what ever they were needed. Even in the city !
I started carrying pocket knives in elementary school in suburban New York. Nobody batted an eye. I did have to negotiate with mom, though -- she only agreed to let me have one if I joined the Cub Scouts. I think she figured they'd give me enough opportunity to use it that I wouldn't go around carving the furniture.

My two favorite knives as a young boy were the Barlows and Texas Toothpicks. At some point, fell in love with the Case Canoes. Around fifteen I bought a USMC and at 16 got a 110.

With a Canoe, 110 and USMC, I thought I was set for life :D
That was around 1981.

When I was a kid I always wanted a switch blade or butterfly knife, didn't matter what brand it was, I just wanted one because I saw the older kids on the block had switch blades & balisongs.

That was one of the main reason I became a knife nut.

1. My dads Gerber that work gave him for so many years at his job. I have that now.

2. A Buck 124 becuase of Burt in "Tremors".

3. Probably one of those Swiss Army knives with 500 attachments.

4. My uncle had a super cheap Rambo knife with camo pattern and a compas. I ended up with that as a kid but it couldn't cut warm butter. My dad probably threw that away before I took it to school.

I believe it was tremors 2 where Micheal gross carried a Buck 124 wasn't it ?

The two knives I wanted as a young kid were a Camillus Cub Scout knife ( I got that one and lost it). The other was a SAK. Not just any SAK, the one issued to the troops. I was smart enough to realize that out of all the red plastic SAKs, I saw, only one model would be an issue item. All the rest would be for commercial sale and, therefore, not real Swiss Army Knives! The funny thing, I had no clue about the Alox Soldier or the Pioneer. This was in the early 1960's.

In my early teens I wanted a Buck 112 Ranger. And I got one! Unlike most, it featured black scales (an early model) and I used it on all my hunting trips with my father. Later, in my twenties, it was stolen out out of my car by a mechanic that was doing some work for me. I hope he cut his thumb off with the darn thing or at least cut deep enough for nerve and tendon damage. Slimeball.

YES! I just watched Big Trouble in Little China again. I believe the knife was a Blackie Collins Tac II. I think Gerber produced a version of that exact knife as well though.

As a kid I had a Boy Scout knife that I carried with me everywhere, including school. In college,I accompanied some friends on a spring vacation trip to Mexico where I got a 4-5 inch Italian switchblade. Too intimidating for me to carry anywhere, but fun to play with. Then lived in some big cities where carrying a knife was problematic, and didn't t start carrying again until I was about 30. Have carried a knife most days ever since.

When we were young, in my group of friends we each had our favorites. Mine were and for the most still are Schrades. But I had a friend whose older brother was in the service and had a Puma Prince he brought back from Germany. Oh how I coveted that knife and bug him constantly to sell it to me. He of course would just shoo me away like a fly.
A few years later I did find some Pumas at a hardware store in town that had a large knife display. Seeing the price of these Pumas, I figured I would never be able to get one of my own.
Once I started working though, I still wanted one. I saw a Duke at that same hardware store and decided to rob my savings account and buy it. I did carry it around, mostly to show off, I was afraid to use it. It was too pretty and way too expensive for the likes of me.
I did eventually get to the point were I would use it, though for lite cutting. I never really could bring myself to get it dirty.
I still have it, still in beautiful condition. And I eventually did also get a Prince. Would like to add the Emperor to the set, but at the astronomical prices those knife are bringing, I think I can live without it.
And as a last note, my dad would tell me of his favorite knives from his youth, and he was around when flint was a super steel.

Oldest ones i can remember were a victorinox(have owned many) and the one i was really obsessed with was a kabar usmc(had one of those too). Neither disappointed.

1. Victorinox, got some as a kid, have gotten numerous over the past 3 decades...
2. Rambo knife, got the $5 copy
3. That titanium buck110, thought it was very cool, never got one.

I have a very old Wenger. I had two actually, misplaced one, sigh... it's here somewhere. They're all old AF like me.

Anyway, I wanted to say I always wanted one of those hollow "Rambo" survival knives and was jealous as heck when my brother got one, but later was sniggering as the blade came off. As you know in those cheap crappy knives is just bolted onto the handle.

As a kid, what started it all, was the knife carried by Johnny Weismueller as Tarzan, so any large knife would do. Then the hollow handled survival knives took off after seeing Rambo, First Blood, so I bought an inexpensive metal handled one in 420 steel with the stuff inside. But the one that caught my eye even then was a Mark 2 knife I saw in the display case at Best Dept Store in Fairfax, VA (not Best Buy). They also had a Bowie kit knife that had a nice big shiny clip blade. Later, I fell in love with all the knives in the very early Smoky Mountain Knifeworks catalogs. I finally got that Kabar Mark 2 during college, and used it to cut up fruit and boxes. Still got it.

Lastly, what started my descent into madness and later to customs were the frequent sale flyers from Cutlery Shoppe with close outs or special limited offers. The knife that still eludes my grasp is the Ek Model 5 in black Micarta, think about it, a large Bowie knife that I would want on my side in the wilds....just like Tarzan in the movies. Some kid dreams still stay with us into adulthood.

Oh yeah, I remember getting those PM Limited catalogs, the knives were drawn instead of photos, lots of Vic and Puma with some others. Now I will have to find the one old copy I still have!

I got my Puma White Hunter II, 2000, and Sport Tek from those catalog flyers.

Always wanted a decent multi-tool. I never really go into higher end knives until my brother got an account on here and got a Spyderco Tenatious then he got a couple more Spyderco's and then told me about it and from there we went.
