Ok guys. So I just recently got back into camping and i'm definately a bare bones type of person. I want to bring everything I absolutely need and nothing I want. I have my gear down, all except my knives. The places i camp all have bathrooms, a front office, some have little stores for camping odds and ends and they mostly have roads going to them. Not my ideal situation as i'm more of a woodsy, not so much domesticated camping type of person, but the girlfriend will not do that type of camping. Anyways, i know all of my knives will hold up and whatnot but i'm wondering from the more experienced guys what i should bring. I pack different just going into the woods, but camping with people around and stores and such confuses the hell out of me as far as whether i should be in pack everything i need mode or just one knife and deal with it. Heres my list:

-Buck 110
-Kershaw Wildcat Ridge
-Benchmade Benchmite II
-Victorinox Centurion
-CRKT M16-03
-Kershaw Blur
-Timberline Kelly Worden Tactical Large
-Victorinox Swisstool
-Buck X-Tract
-Frosts Cutlery 860 Clipper Stainless
-Benchmade 551S Griptilian (Partial Serration)

I always bring with me a Victorinox Supertinker. I just leave it out for people to use as a beat up knife, but never use it myself or consider it a part of my pack. The list above is just knives i trust/keep out for EDC. Most of my other knives are either sentimental/not used or just in need of repair and not worth bringing anyways. Thanks for the help guys!

That's what i've been thinking also, but i havent used it to its full extent yet so i don't know how well the blades hold up. I've mainly used the tools/pliers.

Out of all that...I say the Swiss tool on your belt,( Swisstools have great saws and sharp blades), The Benchmade or Blur in your pocket...but with the Swiss Tool you won't need a serrated edge I'd probably take the Blur, and then depending on where maybe the 119 in your pack on any long hikes. I used to keep an issue pilot survival knife in my pack when I went to Fall Creek Falls a lot, where it is sort or crowded certain times of the year, (have an ex that wouldn't do the primitive thing either), actually the knife is still in a pack that stays in the truck but I may replace it with the SEAL Pup (if my current doesn't swipe it) in which case I'll likely see about having someone make me a more "bushcrafty" style knife to take just to "be-as-effective-yet-appear-less-threatening" sort of thing. I like having at least a small fixed along. I used to have a couple of small Benchmade fixed blades but that leeds me back to talking about the ex and I really don't won't to go there...just glad she's gone. Not for her no primitive camping thing but rather all the times I had to just to cope with her lol.

Ahh, i'm poor in comparison to most of you i bet. I paid 100$ for the griptilian all in what i thought would be a good idea. I figured if i shelled out the extra cash for the blade everyone has it must be a good one! But i just cant bring myself to use it. im afraid of ruining the edge or breaking something. I have a hard time stomaching chipped edges and snapped tips. It's hard for me to repair. I will take any victorinox product and beat the crap out of it because i know they come back for more. I also havent used the 110 yet either. So the swisstool is in my pack for good. The blur was givin to me by my girlfriend so it has some sentimental value and like the griptilian, i don't want to damage it but if the grippy and the blur were able to take abuse and everyday tasks without damage or chipped edges i'd have em in my pocket 24/7. I'm not worried about sharpening, just snapped tips and damaged blades.

honestly, I love the 110, as well as most any BM models, including all the 550 series.
I currently carry a crkt m-16 13sf on SAR if that helps. for me on most trips, a mutitool and folder and im perfectly set.

I camp in the middle of butt*&(& nowhere, so an axe and fixed Is key, but on public land like that, you dont want any one screaming bluddy murder when you make a sammech;):D

Trust me, you're probably not poor in comparison to everybody here. Unless Benchmade has changed there way of doing things over the last few years, wouldn't surprise me as many have, I wouldn't fear using one of their knives. I used to carry a Benchmade Emerson Design in ATS34 and it developed no blade play and the tip didn't chip after using it at least a time or two on a daily basis for three straight years. It was well worth the $114.00+tax I gavce for it back then.
Personally a knife I don't want to use is one thing...I actually have a couple of those around, but a knife I am affraid to use is useless to me.

Hey SuzukiGS750EZ,

I think you answered your own question. You stated that you're camping in relatively tame surroundings to please your girlfriend (and there's nothing wrong with that ) and you also mentioned that she gave you the Blur (had to do a search - not familiar with the knife), so the obvious answer is the Blur. It certainly looks like it would do the job, and if you don't take it she will want to know why not.

And like mistwalker says, if you're afraid to use the knife, it is useless. Also, if it can't take the heat, better to find out in a camp ground than out in the boonies where you might really need it.

Doc

Well yes, but the only knives i truly know will hold up, and i know this because i was younger and didnt have a care in the world as far as what i used my knives for, and didnt have to sharpen them or know anything about maintenance (wish i still did, knowledge kills). I trust all victorinox knives, my CRKT m16-03 and my buck x-tract. I don't know why i can't bring myself to use the griptilian or blur. Probably because they were expensive and i dunno. I guess i can see your point, no point in showing off a work knife and keeping it mint if ill never use it.

Personally, if I have a knife, I use it... Im not rich or boring enough to be a 'collector' ;)

As far as where you are camping, you could probably get away with a steak knife - so just bring what you want to use - and might as well please the gf in the bargain.

There are a bunch of CT folks in here if you are also looking for more backwoods camping to break in the other knives;)

Not hardly....

When you really get back into camping and your ready for a dedicated "bushcraft" knife. You will be very surprised how far $100 or so will go with any of the fine custom makers who visit this forum.

Very true, I picked up a JK hiker for $100 its a absurdly tough knife in a really nice size.

Hiker to the right, 4in blade, 1/8 thick, O1 tool steel.

Of those you listed, the Swiss Tool and 110 are a definite. However, I would also take the blur since she gave it to you. If you don't at least take it, she will think you don't like it.

Yep, I just talked to one of the makers here about a more "bushcrafty" knife for taking to areas like state parks and such to look less "menacing", just to see what I would be looking at price wise. 4.75 inch blade with 4.5 inch handle (I have a personal thing about blades being longer than handles but that's just me) and the price was really close to that. Not bad at all for having a knife made to your own personal specifications. So....lol, now I am trying like h#ll to come up with the extra cash....where there's a will there is a way :)

Hmm, I missed the fact that she gave you the blur, in that case I would take that. I have been with my GF for over 8 years now, she still buys me knives, and I make sure for at least the next two times we go camping, I take the newest knife, she WILL ask " where's the one I just got you!" :D

Good point! If you have a girl that is willing to throw down the cash on a decent knife as a gift for you don't EVER let her think you don't like it.

Out of the blades you listed I would take the 110. I would have said the benchmade but I don't care for combo edges. I would not worry about your 'Grip' it is one of the toughest folders out there. I have put mine through hell and it has nothing to show for it in edge damage. Benchmades 154CM is one of my favorite in a production folder.
