Knock Off Alert!!

I was just re-reading parts of this thread again and came upon this link: http://www.linton.com.tw/usa/index.asp
This page will provide a good 15 minutes of amusement, at Linton's expense. ;)

Go there and read the "Knife News".

I especially like 8/12/2002 when they appoint themselves as their own Global Marketing and Advertising Unit. I guess this "unit" is the sewage they sent to the NYCKS. Let us know what they and their recycled soup can wares looked like, Brian, as we can't visualize without some kind of description.

Or 9/12/2002 when they claim they are "gonna change knife industry trends" with the "largest folding knives ever to be invented". Rivetting information. We better brace ourselves, folks. :p

The rest of the page is funny too, kinda sad if they think their product descriptions will aid their marketting efforts. :o The Linton Biography under "About Us" is also worth a quick once-over for some cheap S&G.:barf:

(edited for spelling)

Hi Liong,

I enjoyed meeting you at the show on Friday and I must say you have some dynamite designs.

As far as what I observed regarding Litton: I was in before noon and saw only one person showing any interest in their knives. Whoever saw them smiling, must have seen them early. I passed by their table several time during the day and all I saw were 3 or 4 representatives with long faces. :( Everyone else pretty much ignored their presence :grumpy: . I seriously doubt that they offset the cost of their appearance with what, if anything, they sold. Just my observations.

Take it easy, BadGuy -- look here for James' bonafides

I have no problem with him or anything, I was just curious how he fit in, For a second I thought it was someone from that company coming in here to appologize or something :)

While Bladeforums is down for a few days, if you're interested in further developments as we organize "le resistance" -- you'll be able to follow it in tactical forums, and linked in knifeforums. Let's just say that a momentum has begun that'll maybe put counterfeiters out of business once and for all. Can anyone say organized worldwide boycotts of counterfeiters? :D That means every member of BFC will become an important part of the collective voice that stops this once and for all. Stay tuned.

Apologies for mentioning those other forums here Kevin, but it's only while BFC is down for maintenance.

Best,

Brian.

Interesting thread... reminds me of all the hobbies I have been involved in relative to authenticity, creative license, trademark, and copyright. This was ranging from everything from yoyos, martial arts, toy collecting, firearms, and, of course, knives.

I think the best bet is that that anybody pasionate and serious about collecting or a hobby should nominate themselves to be a spokesman. The most effective way to guard against nefarious, underhanded, and sinister activities, which may undermine a legitimate insitution, is education. Advocacy and up to date current knowledge will always be effective "weapons" against those that would be out to make a quick buck.

Of course, being professional and courteous helps quite a bit.

Just my 2 cents.

I know.. almost 2 years later.. has anything happened? I see they are still inbusiness... selling knock-offs...

Posts like these are usually motivated by an agenda. Nevertheless, the allegations are correct. Linton is well known for copycatting.

Checking out their latest designs I don't see that they are so obviously knocking off other manufacturers or makers like they were in the past. Maybe I just haven't seen the original knives that they are knocking off.

Keith,

Aren't they still doing the Ryan knockoffs? Ugly Ryans (well, uglier than they are already), but...

Admittedly, the Strider knockoffs have been DorkOps-ified somewhat and aren't quite so Striderly, but it's not like any of us couldn't see the resemblance (the hilt, painted stripes, and cord wrap are kind of familiar.) That funny cutout looks like a "blood groove" (snicker) that got cut all the way through.

I don't really see too much innovation except for the funky diamond opening hole. Mm, mm, comfy.

Yeah, but that agenda can be to just see a wrong righted. There are some of us out here who are that naive. And I'm one of them.

Wow, that *%$t isnt even funny, the "combat" knife looks verry like the Emerson Kandahar, to point out another, someone should send them some original designes they obviously need the help !!!!!!!

There are so many companies besides these that knock off makers. There is nothing we can do about it.
The comment about strider being mad is cool but they can do nothing either.

A company I work with design wise just sued master cutlery (one of the biggest copycats out there). NOTHING could be done. We had copyrights and patents on the product!
This is what its come to.

The problem of knock-offs hasn't gone away but that's twice now this two-year-old thread has been resurrected and people are seeing this old stuff and thinking it's new (because most people don't look at the dates on posts) and I think it's just confusing people. I'm going to close this thread. I don't mean to discourage talking about knock-offs but if we do let's talk about the present situation not the situation two years ago -- or if we want to talk about the knock-off situation of two years ago let's make it clear to everybody who opens the thread what we're talking about.
