Ken Onion has left Kershaw in order to work on other projects. I didn't want to break the news in the general forum, but I looked and didn't seem like anyone else was going to. Obviously, Kershaw/KO fans like myself and many others will miss his involvement greatly. You can find out more in the "Onions" thread in the Kershaw forum.

Quotes from KO himself on the subject:

Thanks for the encouragement guys! There are several things to concider and a ton of work ahead. Not absolutly sure what direction to go but I'm a dreamer and I'm sure It will be a lot of fun. I hope to scout some great, diverse and innovative knifemaker talent as soon as everything is in place.

It's sad but true, I wish Kershaw all the best.

Thanks! Who knows what the future may bring .Its been a good run ,I appreciate all of your support and kindness.I'll still check in and help out when I can.

Thats alright...
Ken left his legacy through kershaw with a bunch of great designs...
But kershaw has plenty of other great makers still working with their designs..

I have no doubt Kershaw will persevere, but KO is probably my favorite designer in the entire industry, so for me personally, it's a big loss.

I assume he's starting his own production company? Whatever he's doing I wish him the best of luck!

Am I a jinx ...I email Justin Gringrich about a custom Ranger days before he makes his move...earlier this week I decide on the Onion designed Shallot and he leaves Kershaw... who will be my next 'victim' ? :o

He changed the landscape on production folders during his time working with Kershaw;
I'm sure they made plenty of (well-deserved) money together; folks move on one way or another...

But Kershaw's great name, QC, and willingness to innovate I think will ensure it a steady stream
of great designers to work with...including making room for the possibility of a future "Ken Onion".

sigh.. I was gunna try to get back into Kershaws..... now, I dunno. He should join the BM team, not that they need any help.

he was a perfect fit with Kershaw....Benchmade is its own thing...

hopefully he'll take a break and rejoin Kershaw in a less involved roll. Maybe a couple KOs a year instead of doing 80% of the entire lineup.

I'm actually a huge fan of Kershaw's non-Onion knives. I'm glad the flip side of this will bring those makers up to the household name that Onion is. I'm not sure who designed the OD-1, but bring that guys name out, see what he can do.

As long as they keep the Onion designed knives in poduction, I'll be happy.
Personally, I like Tim Gaylean (or whatever the heck the name of the guy who designed the JYD is!)

Lee Williams.

I believe we'll see more of his stuff from Kershaw.

WOW. KO was a big reason for making Kershaw the company it is now. I'm sure his designs will be around for a while. I would'nt be surprized if the Leek is their best seller.

I'm not certain, but I remember reading the Chive was Kershaw's best selling model. No worries...that's a KO design as well.
