What wording did you find objectionable?

The "things are settling down without him" part on the "no" answer. The impression I drew from it (not that it was your intent, nor were you responsible for house my brain assembles inferences) was that STeven should keep up with his experiment because it has become more pleasant with his absence.

My thought as to why a lot of dust has been thrown forth and suspended in this part of cyberspace is because there have been a few people here who not only have strong, defensible opinions, but also a confidence in their beliefs which only changes when someone can prove a situation is otherwise to their satisfaction (which, in turn, becomes a new opinion held with the same strength and confidence).

It isn't just here and it isn't just STeven and it's different than people whose confidence is not based on facts, but on their ability to "win" arguments despite facts. You'll see a lot of that in the personae of the more successful collectors and it sometimes show through in the more accomodating personae of their preferred makers. There's a lot to be said about those whom it bothers, but it can all be saved for the next 26 hour day. ;)

This reminds me of a song by STYX.

Too much time on my hands, it's ticking away with my sanity
I've got too much time on my hands, it's hard to believe such a calamity
I've got too much time on my hands and it's ticking away from me
Too much time on my hands, too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands

And I'm not talking about just the occasonal obnoxious troll.

STeven is not an obnoxious troll - occasional or otherwise.

I don't believe Buddy was referring to STeven with that statement. I believe he was saying that, along with trolls, even genuine and sincere people have been banned for taking some things a little too off base.

edited to add:

Anthony,

Now I remember why I'm more drawn to bel canto than to classic rock these days. ;)

Should've been a third choice:
Don't cut it short and stick to his guns.

Stick to your guns STeven.
I like a guy that calls 'em like he sees 'em.

You may well be right. I wasn't sure whether he was calling STeven a troll or not. And to make certain I didn't horrendously misrepresent his statement, I quoted it directly. But as the whole "troll" thing was kind of left dangling, I was making it clear that in my opinion it would be inappropriate to label STeven as such.

Thanks for the directions Keith.

I believed there was more heartbreak... so now I feel silly :p

In any case.. things will eventualy get back to normal.

You guys have a great week.

Jose and Kevin,

I have not misjudged STeven (see my post on STeven's what's the point thread), but with all due respect I think you have. You and others are underestimating his potential and unwittingly becoming his enablers. You can't be a friend if you don't make a friend, and STeven makes too many enemies with his schoolyard bully face. Genghis Khan's lieutenants worshiped his loyalty to them, but most historians and all humanitarians are unimpressed.

I'm a staunch defender of brutally honest, uncensored criticism (see my post on Kevin's critique thread), STeven's signature shtick, but I understand why he is the poster child for the side that wants a softer BF. I must say that STeven has always treated me with respect, even when he might not have. I have no personal animus; I'm on his side. My comments are solely on what I've witnessed and a belief that he can be less incendiary.

Mike Jordan had to play by the rules, and so must STeven if he is to rise above a selective, benevolent Genghis Khan. IMHO there is only one rule here--civility, for one and for all. STeven misses that standard more than he should, and many are prone to just wink. Can you imagine what STeven would be to us if he could acquire a pinch of Coop's couth; I can, which is why I will not do him the disservice of being a status quo enabler.

I don't want him to be Coop's clone or for us to unseason his hot and spicy. All I'm recommending is he step up to the plate and hit home runs with a transparent character commensurate with his inordinate talents and virtues to all forumites, not just his 12 disciples.

The question is not whether we want him on this forum, but what face do we want him to wear. He get my vote as is, but I'm hoping for much more, for his sake mostly.

My point is you can't and IMO shouldn't judge someone only by what they write on a forum.

I know you write well. What else does that tell me about you the person? Absolutely nothing for sure. As anyone can write anything though some better than others.

Now looking someone in the eye conversing with them and seeing how they treat and interact with others and react to different situations, that's how you get to know someone enough to judge them accurately. It can be as simple as observing how they treat a waitress or waiter at dinner. If there's a problem or someone needs assistance do they step up or back.

I misjudged STeven? Not a chance...... Do I always agree with the way he behaves here? Not a chance. Do I know he's a good and decent guy? Without a doubt.

Hope I get a chance to meet you someday as you seem to be a very interesting person. But right now I know you write well. :) ;)

I thought Steven's experiment was flawed but it turns out my poll was even more flawed... :D This poll wasn't meant to be a vehicle to judge him, just as a way to cut his experiment short. IMO the outcome has already been determined but if he needs a break from here it's his decision. He is knowledgeable and adds to the dialogue here, I think it would be a waste to lose his insight for no good reason. If there's more to it than I perceived then by all means take some time off, Steve...
