kraton disintegration/decay

Well folks, I dug out all of my CS stuff and I see that some are still good. A Master Hunter, an SRK, and a Recon Tanto are still intact. No goo forming, even around the brass thong tubes.

Yoda,

Man, I am sorry to hear about that. And the car company's wonder why more and more people are not buying American. I hope you found it was on some kind of recall and you got it fixed with no cost to you.

That has got to SUCK!

Yeah that sucks about the bumper. However the rubber on the bumper was (just by virtue of it being constantly outside) exposed to daily UV exposure plus dirt, rocks and air pollution. Its exposed to much more constant wear and exposure than your average sheath knife. A year in a bumpers life is probaby like 10 or 20 in knife years. As they say its not the years its the milage!

Yes, however the rubber used in my radiator hoses, fuel lines, and various other engine compartment stuffs experience conditions many orders of magnitude harsher than the rubber bumpers on my tailgate. And those are pretty much all the same kind of rubber they've been using for the last 30 years. Makes me worry a bit about our favorite wonder polymers/plastics having issues with durability they shouldn't.

Thats the problem i guess, exactly how different is regular old rubber from kraton? Are there any chemists here who can elaborate on this difference? Also regarding the bumper never underestimate how damaging constant ultra violet exposure can be. remember the hoses in the engine compartment are all shielded from uv.
This also makes me also wonder about the rubber in gun grips. I know a few guys who have pachmyr grips that are over 20 years old that are still mint. And they been exposed to sweat/hoppes/wd-40/3-1 oil on a regular basis.
