Anyone know the scoop why Knives Ship Free are moving to Michigan? It was only recently that they moved their retail location?

The common sense reasons that I can think of are: They like Michigan and perhaps it's "home". Bark River knives dominate their sales and they can cut the shipping expense down to essentially zero. It's a more central location in the US. They have a very limited retail knife business (brick & mortar store) and it doesn't justify the expense and they are going mostly mail order only.

I like companies "voting" with their feet. Like when Magpul told Colorado to kiss their butt over their magazine legislation.

Welcome to my home state :D
Can't wait to take a road trip up to see the new location when you're moved in. I usually take a motorcycle trip up to the UP at the end of the summer/ early fall.

Um... Moving your business so you can pay your employees less?
I think I'd shop elsewhere... Just sayin'

Except the bill to ban ivory never passed

http://www.oregonlive.com/pets/index.ssf/2015/06/bill_to_end_ivory_trade_in_ore.html

There are alot of sound business and probably personal reasons for them to move. Persecution from the ivory trade is not one of them.

That is interesting. Thanks for the link.

Did the rise in minimum wage already pass?

Edit:

I was not here for the first move, but I have a couple questions:

KSF is usually 10 bucks higher on most of their prices. Once the move happens will those prices drop on Bark River knives due to the proximity to Bark River?

Will the prices go up a few bucks on other brands to balance out the sale/moving cost?

You're perfectly welcome to do that, but I could easily present the same situation as "moving your business so you can pay your employees the same" and your point would be completely invalid.

Exactly.

And depending on the relative costs of living, paying them the same dollar amounts could even mean a raise.

The business climate in Oregon is not good. The state of Oregon has taken a hard left turn politically. Businesses are targets for politicians. A couple years ago, voters in Oregon passed a law that caused many businesses to leave the state. This year there have been political decisions against businesses that will cause more businesses to leave.

I know this because we recently moved our business from Washington. Oregon was on the list of potential states. After the last few years we removed Oregon from our list.

You hit the nail on the head, Chuck!

There are so many people/businesses, that have left the entire left coast (CA/OR/WA), for this very reason. We were having a nice barbeque yesterday, with several families; many from these very States. They all left, & relocated up here to this beautiful, remote, part of Idaho, to escape the political insanity/taxes/legislation/regulations, that were slowly eating up the profit margin needed, to successfully run a business.

If it weren't for my passion for surfing, & love for the beauty of the Pacific Ocean, I would move here permanently.

If things in our Country do not chance soon, there will be another mass exodus of companies, LEAVING AMERICAN SOIL! If my comment is too political, Mod's, please let me know, & I'll edit it.

You must not have even a bit of an understanding of business or what it's like to run a small business. But that's okay, most people don't and instead rely on emotional appeals. No criticism of you as an individual... Just sayin'

I don't really purchase from KnivesShipFree because their prices are usually higher, but I'm thinking about getting a KSF pocket sheath and this gave me a little more motivation.

And yet, the state has been seeing record growth in their economy for the last 5 years running and the population is increasing. Unemployment, even with those minimum wage increases is below the national average. Strange...

Oregon was just voted to be the 2nd worst state to make a living in , Hawaii was 1st.

Off Topic:

Chuck what are the laws you are refering to?

On Topic:

I like Derrick and hope the best for him and his.

With that said, he did mention two reasons in his video explanation. Those being ivory and laws. As long as his business is ethical I do not really care that he is moving.

What I am curious about is in that same video Derrick stated he will be working closely with Mike Stewart. Does that closer working benefit the consumer at all other than creative input. Specifically, does working closer mean lower prices? It should mean lower cost for Derrick be that close in proximity, but does that also mean we as the consumer will see a KSF price listing that is more competitive with other sites?

Also, will the prices of the other brands remain slightly higher than most others, or will they also drop possibly through lower cost of living, taxes, etc?

Like I said, I like Derrick, but I do wish he would focus more on competitive prices instead of marketing. The KSF adds on other sites are unwanted and honestly deter me.
