I snagged a Columbia River Lake 111-2 on eBay for $17. I wasn't expecting much, but it was virtually impossible to open with one hand, had some side-to-side blade play, and was butterknife dull. I sent it back under warranty, and they replaced it. Pittsburgh to Oregon and back in 7 days! The replacement is a bit stiff, but workable. No blade play whatsoever, and razor sharp. Compared to the original, it looks like they may have reprofiled it before they shipped it. Whatever they did, they got it right. For $24 (cost + return postage w/insurance), I got a usable, abusable EDC blade. I realize CRKT knives are not the Cadillacs of the knife world, but at least they stand behind their products with no quibbling. That's more than I can say for the "knife with the hole." My hat's off to CRKT!

Glad to hear that you are happy with the outcome.

I don't think this is the place for you to bash Spyderco. :thumbdn: :thumbdn:

I have found that Sal stands behind his products.

PS - I see this thread got moved to a more appropriate Forum.

What's your beef with Spyderco?

Good to hear... also never had an issue with spyderco.. sal is a great guy to deal with in my experience..

I'm pleased with the two CRKT knives I've bought. Don't know about hole-knives, never seen one up close. Not my cup-o-tea, but I wouldn't bash them. Lots of people swear by them. I doubt they're all wrong.

Would you mind telling me what $17 "knife with a hole" you have that you aren't satisfied with?

I like CRKT, some nice designs coming out of them. Most aren't to my taste but they have some nice designers working with them.

I contacted CRKT awhile ago about replacement screws, spacers & pivot for a M16-13LE I'd carried IWB and suffered bad rust.

About a week later all the parts showed up.

Free.

Halfway round the world.

Contrast that with companies that wont even send me a cataloge over here.

Cheers

:)

I emailed Spyderco about the very weak in-handle blade retention of my Sage 2. I can deploy it 100% with a strong flick of my wrist, no thumb needed. They said to mail it back along with a check for $5 for return postage. If the knife was found to be defective, they would return the check. It's not about the money; I just found that irritating.

Found what irritating?

I found it irritating that they want a check for return postage in the event that they decide my knife is not defective.

As part of a warranty claim, yes, it bothers me that shipping is not magically free. Still confused?

It costs money to ship stuff, would you rather they simply held onto the knife or do you want it back?

People are so concerned about $5 for shipping it really baffles me. Actual shipping charges are normally around $8 depending on who you use to ship. I believe Spyderco uses UPS.

I made my stance abundantly clear in my earlier posts. It's not the money, it's the principle of the thing. Apparently, I am unable to help you grasp this concept; you are way too confused and baffled. I am done with this thread. Move on, please.

And the principal is what?

You made nothing "abundantly clear" in your original post besides the fact that you believe makers of "knives with holes" want to "quibble" about a warranty claim.

Hey, I'll even copy your original post here for you.
