Kydex-Kevlar Sheath

Hmmm. I'll have to wait for the temps to plummet for me to justify getting ahold of that bad boy for testing...:grumpy:

Ah well. It'll be worth the wait.:p

Sort of. Andrew had to close shop since he moved to go to college, and presumably doesn't have the time or the workspace to make them anymore. I think the one he made for me was his last one. He made one for me in white kydex to match my AT1, and it's pretty sweet. I wish I had sent a few more knives to him for sheaths before he left for college.

I don't have any experiance with Kevlar. I'm not sure if I read it right but it sounds like he did a test where he balanced it perpendicular on a board and it held 250 lbs with a slight bend and returned back to straight. Is this correct?
What's the weight of these sheaths?

I don't have a scale, but the weight isn't noticeably more than any other drop-leg kydex sheath that has two layers of kydex. He only uses a few layers (2-3?) of kevlar sandwiched in between, so whatever extra weight the kevlar causes is negligible. It's not like a flak vest wrapped around your knife or anything like that.

Silas-
I have the original kydex/kevlar sheath made. It was a collaboration between Andrew and I, and I tested it extensively ...as did some other colleagues. Most notable, was a test conducted at -20F where the sheath was suspended between bricks (one at either end, blade extracted) and I stood on it as close to middle as possible. Given that this sheath was for a Battle Mistress (read: long sheath) and I am large (read: 250lbs) this is a significant test. The sheath bowed slightly ...perhaps 1/4 inch but did not crack. A similar sheath without the kevlar cloth broke immediately as I attempted to step up onto it.

I do not know where Andrew went with this project, but I am working with various laminates to mitigate the cold-weather cracking issue. Included in this are kydex shells for leather sheaths and kevlar between two layers of kydex. I do not offer these for sale yet, except in a rare case. Production costs make them expensive.

O.K. guys, let's come back to reality with this.

If you were gonna chose between fusing kydex&kevlar, and hitting the week long parties in the coed dorms, which would you chose? (if you said kydex/kevlar, you need help...)

MMMmmmmmmm.................nevermind. :grumpy:

Good call Mike ;)

Now, as the case often is, if the choice was between chemistry and papers and kyvlex....

Carl, BTW, is making some fantastic stuff now (although I haven't seen it, from what has been described in other places his stuff is unbelievable).

Andrew, I'll have to check Carl's work out. The white one you made for me absolutely rocks. Thanks again.

Andrew-
We need to exchange addresses or pictures or something.....
I'd hate for you to go out on a limb thinking I was as good as you
I'm still a student of sheath-stuff looking to make them worthy of a Busse :D

Guys, Carl just doesn't want people hassling him with orders ;)

I can't blame him....I remember the tens of hours that went into one kyvlex rig!
