Land Navigation, Map and Compass Tutorial and Hand Out (LINK NOW ADDED!)

Wow Kevin, I just read the tutorial and it is fantastic. I am going to find a way to print it, waterproof it and keep it with me. It is so clear and concise. Thank you for your generous offering.

Kevin,

I swear you do these presentations about the time I am giving a similar one. I am sure, as last time, I will borrow from you - if you don't mind again.

I always give a link to the WLC in case people are interested.

Excellent presentation Kevin. Thanks, I'm about half way through it, but alas have to go to work.

Maybe you should put up a sticky with your slide-share presentations. There is the bowdrill one and this one.

HOLY CRAP. I just had a chance to read the entire thing. MAN that is good stuff. A LOT of info in there. Very clear and concise.

However, in your pacing pictures - who is the UGLY guy in the pictures. Whew!!! He will scare the kids!

Thanks a ton man for this - I am going to get to work and brush up on my skills!

Thanks Kevin! I can't wait to check this out tonight at home when I don't have my boss walking in every 5 minutes asking what using a compass has to do with upgrading his Exchange server.... :)

Wow that is a lot of great info! Thank you for sharing!

Well you need to align the magnetic direction of the hard drive so it is in harmony with the earths magnetic field when it is turning, otherwise Exchange will throw unexpected and unexplicable errors ...

Kev, that was awesome - I'm going to use it to help teach my daughter. It's great for me too, because I don't know about everyone else, but I have to take bearings so infrequently, that everytime I do, I pretty much have to re-invent the wheel. Packing up a couple of these slides in a ziplock bag should definitely save some time. I never heard of the concept of pace beads before, and I like it! Thank you.

LOL, that's too funny. :p

What a forum - excellent information and good-hearted humor.

Thanks Kevin! Looks great and I can't wait to spend more time going through it thoroughly.

+1. Also, if you register (free), you can see all presentations uploaded by the user and download the files (Like Kev's Firecraft 101, Lost Proofing, etc).

Hey Kev, that is awesome! Very well thought out and presented, I can tell you put a lot of effort into it. I'm sure a great many people will get a lot out of it. That link should be a sticky so it doesn't get buried. Good stuff!!

I am going to remain silent on the topic (for the time being :D ) But, what I am going to do is make a couple videos showing this technique and alternates, and let you guys come to your own conclusions.

Thanks Kevin, I appreciate your time & efforts!! I look forward to more tutorials...

I vote to make this a sticky, as it is a very informative not to mention appropriate to the W&SS topic.

Cheers

OK, I have to ask. Kevin, why do you advise people not to change the declination adjustment? I think that's one of the best inventions ever and I wouldn't buy a compass without it.

Blackhills,

The reason we teach not to change it is simple. Declination changes from area to area. Let's say you have 14 degrees declination in one state but travel and end up using a map with 10 degrees declination. If you forget to change it, you will end up off track. I know I am forgetful and I like this method because of that. There are other methods out there and you need to find what works for you. We've had excellent feedback from students over the years using this method. It is simple and that is fine with me.
