Occasional fob-with-clip user here. I've never liked the feeling of a knife loose in the bottom of my pocket.

It keeps me from carrying most of my traditionals unless they fit comfortably in my jeans change pocket.

Or the ruler pocket...

I mean..can’t you call the first “lanyard” in the photo just a version of a pocket clip?! Interesting take man.

I use a lanyard on certain knives. It fits around my wrist if need be sometimes it’s easier to dangle the knife there then set it down and pick it back up to me at least. Especially skinning large game when they are hanging. But it’s main use is on my scout knife, it’s a slip joint and sits deep in the pocket and makes pulling the knife out easy. I don’t even have to reach in my pocket to pull it out which is really nice when sitting down. The scout knives also have a clip that attaches to the belt, the lanyard hooks on that clip and keeps the knife from getting lost if it falls out of the pocket, not a concern for some but I have lost knives after they fell out of my pants pocket.

I never liked the idea of a lanyard on chopping tools. Seems stupidly unsafe to me. If that thing whether be an axe or mechete, comes out of my hand while chopping I sure don’t want that thing flying back at me at a high speed.
