If a knife has a hole, then I tie on a lanyard (really more of a fob). I like it because it makes it easy to immediately find the knife and also easier to remove from the pocket. Especially if the clip is very tight.

I keep a 4 to 6 inch lanyard on any of the folders I carry. It's a quick way to get it out of my pocket if I cannot carry clipped.

I only use them on small, clipless folders. Typically tie them with a loop I can get my pinky in. Makes a short handle more stable in a big paw, and easier to fish out of my pocket.

I only put lanyards on knives I use while on boats or when working up a tree or on a roof (to prevent loss over the side when it gets dropped).

I will OCCASIONALLY put a fob on but usually only as a test.

The only lanyard I have ever put on a folder is the one I put on my son's SAK. I only did that to help him retrieve it from his pocket and to hopefully assist him in not losing the knife, so far it has worked out just fine...

Otherwise, I have mixed feelings about lanyards/fobs. I think they can serve a practical purpose if you do not want to have a pocket clip on your knife, having both seems a bit redundant though.

Voted never... then realized I have a couple on my SAKs :/

SAKs are a different bunch since they don't have clips. However, perhaps we'll see some Victorinox SAKs with clips in the future like Boker has done with their Tech-Tool line.

I think I have good reason, but if somebody wants to give me a different fix, great!

I wear work pants from Duluth. They are very thick. To put a clip on the pocket material is hard; do it 10 times with the same knife, and the clip no longer works on standard weight jeans. So I use a lanyard with work pants, and the clip otherwise.

Advice welcome!

I attach lanyards to my SAKs, as it helps when fishing them out of my pocket and gives me a tactile cue as to which end is which. I'll also clip my Streamlight Microstream to it if I'm not carrying them in a pocket slip. Finally, it seems to provide a little extra friction to keep it in my pocket when I'm seated in a car seat or a low chair. I don't have any beads or whatnot; I just tie an (admittedly ugly) half hitch.

I don't use lanyards on knives with pocket clips, though.

Hi! Not a fan of lanyards, specially on folders. Reason for that is I use them quite much for food prep in my EDC use and lanyards/fobs etc. turn out to be very impractical for me. They constantly get in my way during cutting/slicing and they suck up liquids/juices and it’s an inconvenience to clean them properly and have them dried out properly without retaining smells. But when I see all the skulls, dices, beads, etc. here, I have to say I like them quite much :), they're... cool . I use sometimes lanyards on fixed blades, mainly in the forms of some improvised “sword knots” or D-guard, depending on their use.

I put a medium size lanyard on any tip-up knife and a small one on tip down knives that are small like my Sanrenmu 7071 and 7010 it gives a place for my pinky to grip and helps keep it steady for deployment.
