What do you think about lanyards? I've (like a lot of people) started making them from paracord, both 550 and gutted.

I'll probably start making another style with other materials, but pc seems a cheap and easy way to get started.

I just spent a couple of minutes making up this one for fun.

It's the simplest one I've made, but kinda charming in its own way.

One question for those who have used them for a while...

Do you feel that lanyards promote losing the knife? I'd hate to have it snag or something, but it seems relatively secure. Just wondering if anyone has had any trouble because of them.

Pics are welcome!

Any other kind of cordage you'd recommend trying?

I still need to order some beads. I'm looking for titanium and skulls.

I think skulls look pretty tacky. If I used lanyards I'd go for some wood/rock/glass/clay beads.

as pull fobs, fine. as wrist retention, your call. It might be a drag to put on/off if you are switching between chopping and batonning.

I really like them, just started making my own a month or two ago. I like the better grip you can get with especially a smaller knife, and I can identify what is what in my pocket pretty easily.
Here are a few I have made:

The only blade i have string at the handle end of is my small CS latin machete
Sometimes it gets in the way and sticks on me, so it is a not so smart idea

Nice work Franz :) I really like the beads. I also like the hole size on your knives. All of mine seem to be small.

Are you using a jig? I made one for complex bracelets and it works well for lanyards too.

I do mostly free hand but I have a board for bracelets and dog collars! The Hinderers have big holes but the small Sebenza was a problem getting pcord through, it's seriously small.

I tried lanyards, I tink they look nice... really tried to like them but simply prefer without. They just seem to get in the way and my edc handles food/perishables and water. Its an extra thing to be aware of as to how the lanyard is tucked or sticking in the pocket.

I could imagine it being useful for me in smaller knives to add to the grip such as for a Spyderco Dragonfly.

On smaller knives, I like using a short lanyard with a bead. This gives the fingers a little more to grab onto as well as giving you something to grab when pulling out of the pocket. Here is an older picture of some of my Spydies with lanyards. Most of these were tied with plain paracord, and many of them included Atwood Lanslides capped off with a diamond knot. I also included a shot of some of my recent lanyards, fobs and para-ties.

I keep them on knives with either no clip and let it hang out of my pocket or with deep carry clips so its easy to pull out.

I realize, what 'lanyard' has come to (also) mean in modern knife geek parlance, but to me this is what I understand a lanyard to be and how a lanyard was originally ment; to secure an item from being lost thus attached at the other end as well.

Here my kayaking set-up with a lanyard attached to a titanium MISSION MPU.

The only time that I use a lanyard is when I am fishing from a kayak. Prevents the knife from going overboard if I lose my grip. I use a rawhide bootlace for the lanyard and remove it when I am done fishing.

Maybe I need to take up kayaking.

Otoh, if last summers foray out on the lake (with the whole family onboard) in a small boat is any indication I should probably not do that. :D

Never tried a lanyard on any knife other than a fixed blade that I rarely use. Never felt the need to. It just seems like something extra that is not necessary. Plus I wouldn't want things dangling out of my pockets, just not a fashion statement I want to make. It has kind of always come of as a fad to me that I just don't understand. Don't really mind the lanyard holes that most knives have to accommodate people who want them, but most knives would look better without a hole on one end.

I like lanyards on more traditional pieces but not crazy about them on my modern folders..

Bladescout whats that atachment called? (The one that looks like a phone cord)

'Lanyard' as per the thread title and my post.

I believe, its a Blackhawk Tactical Pistol Lanyard. There is not patch on mine, but then its some years old.

As the name implies, its designed for handgun use, but works fine for the knife. I dont want to lose my MISSION MPU when kayaking.
An added bonus to the Blackhawk lanyard is that all metal parts are sealed. Definately a bonus around salt water.
The knife, carabiner and split ring are all titanium, so they just get a very quick rinse along with the vest after use.
Absolutely no sign of corrosion on neither the knife, carabiner nor the split ring after prolonged use and sitting damp in the vest to dry on their own.

Lanyard is quality and works just as intended. It secures the knife well and is not in the way when not in use.

I had the knife halfway out of the vest pocket to show the attachment point, but here is how it looks when the knife/lanyard combo is squared away:

I'm not sure if it qualifies as a true "lanyard", but I have found a simple knotted leather lace makes a huge difference in my ability to grab any knife handle not long enough for a full four-finger grip.
I use baseball glove lacing:
