Lanyards. Yes? No? Pics?

Lanyards, YES! As for beads, this round of lanyards I just hammered some cut up copper tubing. Works great!

 I like lanyards, and I have them on pocketknives, sheath knives and machetes. For the use of lanyards, please check the following website

A Primer on Lanyards (Bill Hay May 2004)

Thanks! Nice write-up.

One thing I'm working on is a pc lanyard with cork in the center. I've got to figure out how much is needed for each knifes weight if I'm to use them as a bouy fob. It's really just for fun since I don't really use folders when camping and over water (fishing or boating), but yeah, fun. :)

I love the look of lanyards on my blades, I used to have one on my Sniper Bladeworks LPC, but working in Africa, anything that sticks out of the pocket like that is just asking to be stolen, so I dont have any on my knives. I did however bring my Wetterlings wildlife axe and I have a lanyard on it.

I'm not sure if it qualifies as a true "lanyard", but I have found a simple knotted leather lace makes a huge difference in my ability to grab any knife handle not long enough for a full four-finger grip.
I use baseball glove lacing:

That is a cool looking knife! I am new at this so I hate to sound stupid but is this something you made or purchased?

Welcome to the forum.
There are no stupid questions - only stupid answers.
Its a DOZIER.
Its a beauty and a very well made knife by a super knifemaker.

Agreed - no stupid questions and I apologize for the lack of information when I posted my pic. This is Dozier's Arkansas Traveler model.

I think lanyards are fine on fixed blades as your hand could get tired from hard use and certain knives could fly from your grip. On folding knives, they look pretty ridiculous. It's an ornamentation fad that will burn out with time. Kinda looks like all those charms young girls put on their cell phones. Also it further complicates drawing a knife while at the same time making it more likely to be accidentally pulled from your pocket. Pure nonsense, but everyone has to do what everyone else is doing, right? I bet traditional knife lovers have such a huge laugh over stuff like this.

RemyKaze, the reasons you listed for lanyards on fixed blades transfer precisely to folding knives. Also, I don't know about the whole "fad" aspect. I've seen them on folding knives before I even knew of this forum and they're still going strong.

I use them on flashlights and multitools but not knives. They make sense for a lot of people, for reasons listed in this thread, so they're obviously useful.

Use one if you like them, don't if you don't. Seems simple enough and I see no reason to belittle something that others find useful or enjoyable.

 A real lanyard, not just a decorative fob, can be used to hang a knife around your neck or to tie a knife to your belt. I have a long lanyard on my lockback pocket knife and put chain knots in the lanyard so that the length of the loop can be adjusted. A brighly colored lanyard can also help locate the knife if is dropped. Please see the article by Bill Hay for examples.:D

I'm sorry, I guess I just don't lose my knife all that much. Just seems like people are coming up with reasons to use something that isn't really necessary. To each their own though.

I only put lanyards on small knives. If I can't get a good four finger grip, I add a lanyard so that my pinky has something to grip onto.

RemyKaze - You don't find it necessary, other people do. No reason to knock it. If you don't like it, you don't. But I don't think it's a "fad".

I've used lanyards ever since I started really getting into the whole knife thing.

The reason being - They do look nice, at least to me, they make it easier to pull a knife out of a pocket and do allow for more grip. The beads? Purely because I like them. My lanyards have also helped me find a knife when I couldn't find it, but I saw the lanyard sticking out of where the knife was hiding. This was in my house.
I also agree with the lanyards on knives with deep carry clips. I own several knives and only one doesn't have a lanyard.

Do I really NEED a lanyard? No, probably not. However, I do like them, and they have come in handy. =]

Personally, I don't feel the need to use one. However, I have found that putting a split ring in the lanyard hole helps to get the knife out a little bit easier/faster in some cases.

Not saying I don't like the looks. I do. If my knife came with one I'd probably even keep it on there. Just saying that it seems more of an aesthetic thing to me, and I'm a utilitarian sorta dude. I also have a penchant for phrasing things entirely the wrong way. I don't think I've ever had a deep carry either. I'm toting this Para 2 til it croaks on me.

I've made a few and experimented a bit. Here's one I made a while back with a rattle I found on a dead rattler on the road.

^Interesting work, I'm guessing it still rattles when shaken?

I like adding a noose knot lanyard fob but I'm not a big fan of adding beads.
It makes pulling out a knife easier and there's space to tightly loop around some fingers for a secured grip during heavier cutting tasks
