Large Sebenza or Multpile knives?

Dear BF community,

I know this is ultimately a question i need to answer myself, but i appreciate your guys opinions and knowledge .

The deal is I have wanted a large Sebenza for many, many years. Unfortunately i could never truly afford one. Luckily, now that I have graduated and have recently been promoted, i have a little more spending money. So, because of said events i have decided to "reward" my self by buying the knife of my "dreams".

My problem is the price, not that i don't want to pay for the Sebenza, i think it is well worth the price tag. The problem is i don't have many knives, or much experience with expensive knives. Also, I'm interested in purchasing a ton of other models (Sage 2, Zt 0450, Mini SERE, etc). My thought process, as silly as it seems, is that maybe i am not ready for such an "expensive" knife?

So... my question is, should i buy multiple "less expensive" knives? Learn, and understand what i like in a knife before i assume that i love a Sebenza, (I'm basing my "love" based on looks alone...I've never even held one....). Or, should i just go for it since I've always truly wanted one?

What do you guys think?

Thanks for helping me with my terribly troubling problems,

Al

I bought a Large plain jane 21 because one popped up with my daughters bday. I had a valid (to me) reason, the funds and the want. So I jumped on it, and I couldn't be happier with the decision.
It gets carried regularly and is a user.

That being said, I have since purchased less expensive knives that I found myself wanting, zt 0770cfM4, SAK Castaway; DPx Heat, BM Minigrip; two GEC Soda Scouts among others.
-------
TLDR: you have the funds, the desire, curiosity, heart behind the item to justify it. If you are going to spring for it, now is the time, while you have the extra income.

While this is a slightly tough decision and you will get a lot of answers, I thought I would throw in what I tell all our customers.

Get what you truly want. If not you will end up coming back and getting it anyway. With that said, you have always wanted a Sebenza, so I say go get you one!

The fact that it has your daughters birthday is quite awesome man! Also, i have yet to hear anyone regret buying a Sebenza! Thanks for your input NJBillK!

Hey if you ever get a used large 21 let me know and lets make a deal!

I'll buy the Sebenza for one reason . You can always use the knife and once you think you are done with it trade it for ZT and a Spyderco .

very easy to answer. just one expensive knife as against several cheaper ones. that's as far as collecting is concerned. now, when you have fully defined your needs for actual use and carry, get another knife (if the sebenza doesn't suit you as a beater.) apply the same discriminating attitude for your EDC-user.

Thanks Hank!

Nothing wrong with your options . ZT 900 and the spyderco sage 2 are great knife quality knives . I wouldn't consider them cheap . Sebenza are nice they are great but if you never handle less expensive knives you will not get the wow moment . Specially if you get a plain 21 . I have others knives that have given me more joy of owning than a sebenza .

I think I am in the minority, but I always wanted a Sebenza but after owning one for awhile I sold it and bought several other knives I like better. Among them: ZT0562CF, Spyderco Stretch CF, and Benchmade 550HG with custom grips. They all hold an edge better, and deploy much easier for me.

Good Luck with whatever you decide.

I was just presented with a similar dilemma. It was a small sebenza or a couple knives as well as some other stuff.

I ended up going with a PM2, a case sodbuster, two flashlights and a new strop. I'm still wondering if I made the right decision...I'll let you know when all the packages arrive!

I put cheap in quotations because compared to the Sebenza they are "cheaper". However, you bring up a good point! I'm, more or less, fully aware of what I'm getting with the Sebenza. But i have no idea what to expect from a ZT or a $150+ Spyderco!

Please do! Sounds like a lot of cool stuff though man!

I agree with you . What I'm saying is that you did you can always trade down for two quality knives but is harder to get a sebenza in a trade believe me I been trying for a month :o

The truth! I would've actually saved money following this advise, not only with knives but most of my other hobbies (especially hifi).

OP you are asking a bunch of enablers jk. If you have extra funds, always wanted one then go for it! I am by no means rich and also hesitated in the beginning, I finally jumped in and love it. These are actually my 2nd or thirds, I sold a couple in the past because I felt it was too expensive for me. I've finally settled on these few, knowing what I like eg. didn't like the small, only large Sebs. If anything, because you worked hard for the money you would appreciate it more.

If you pass on the Sebenza then you'll always wonder (if you're like many of us, you'll sooner or later have a bunch of other knives and a Sebenza...or two...or...;)).
