Buy a cheap (er) knife first, save for retirement and focus on you career. Then buy nice knives.

JK, no one follows that plan.

I started sebenza first and worked my way down. But realizing I should stop, you start judging the knives.

Well, one of two things are going to happen buying a Sebenza for the first time, either you'll look at it and wonder what all the hype is about because fireworks didn't go off when you first held it, the earth didn't move or it didn't give you a warm, fuzzy feeling in your pocket. Or you'll get it and won't be able to wipe the smile off your face, because NOW you get it.
While you're on the hunt, if you haven't already read some threads about the folks that don't get it, please do so. It's always good to review all the reactions to CRK's from folks that don't like them to those that absolutely love them. That may give you a better view of CRK's.
I won't say you'll take the same road as I did, but I've got knives laying around that will probably never be used simply because CRK has quenched my need for IMO the best all around made knife for my EDC chores.
They're all good knives, but they no longer fit what I expect from a knife.
Be warned though, for some like myself, CRK's are addictive and the only fix is another CRK.

There is a small for $257 that I would jump on if I could justify another one. By far my favorite knives, both large and small, and I carry them daily. Going on my 11th (I have sold and traded some over the years) sebenza in my hands on Thursday.

One thing I found interesting was that you said large sebenza, and used small knives as your alternatives. Granted, those knives are middle ground when comparing to a large or small sebenza...but, if you gravitate toward smaller knives, you might like a small sebenza better.
I haven't truly drunk the CRK KoolAid...I've sipped - but not swallowed - so I'd probably encourage you to purchase a couple of knives that interest you. I've got a large micarta insingo - my third CRK purchase (the first two were sold fairly quickly). I like it; but find myself carrying other knives more often than not. I'm glad I didn't give up after either of the first two, and I plan to keep it; but, for me, it isn't the answer to "if you could have only one knife..."
If you want the sebenza, by all means - get one. If you've got doubts - explore them.

Intresting points!

i have always had medium sized to smaller sized knives, mostly do to my work situation, because i was "afraid" to bring attention to myself with a larger/ more tactical blade. However, with the Sebenza, and its price tag, ill get the one i truly want, which is the large. (:

I'll buy the Sebenza for one reason . You can always use the knife and once you think you are done with it trade it for ZT and a Spyderco .

Came here to say this. Start with the Sebenza if you can, then trade down to 2 knives later. Trading up to a Sebenza is much more time consuming, trust me. I would buy pre-owned though because you can save more money and not loose as much after you take the test drive.

I am constantly fighting this battle. Always..and I am only ever truly satisfied when I wait and make the jump because inevitably, you will.So do it now and don't regret missing out.or having to wait longer.

If you want large Sebenza and can afford one - then just get it. It is a great knife and if you will like it, you have a great tool for many years to come.

I would not suggest to jump on the small instead - it has not only the same built quality, but also the same blade thickness which I find a little too much for an EDC of that size (just personal view). And yes - I have a small Sebenza 21 (and may end up having it re-ground for thinner profile) :)

Dear BF community,

I know this is ultimately a question i need to answer myself, but i appreciate your guys opinions and knowledge .

The deal is I have wanted a large Sebenza for many, many years. Unfortunately i could never truly afford one. Luckily, now that I have graduated and have recently been promoted, i have a little more spending money. So, because of said events i have decided to "reward" my self by buying the knife of my "dreams".

My problem is the price, not that i don't want to pay for the Sebenza, i think it is well worth the price tag. The problem is i don't have many knives, or much experience with expensive knives. Also, I'm interested in purchasing a ton of other models (Sage 2, Zt 0450, Mini SERE, etc). My thought process, as silly as it seems, is that maybe i am not ready for such an "expensive" knife?

So... my question is, should i buy multiple "less expensive" knives? Learn, and understand what i like in a knife before i assume that i love a Sebenza, (I'm basing my "love" based on looks alone...I've never even held one....). Or, should i just go for it since I've always truly wanted one?

What do you guys think?

Thanks for helping me with my terribly troubling problems,

Al

You could buy 3-4 really cool knives for $425, but a Sebenza is a Sebenza, probably the best production knife available right now. One thing to consider is that the Sebenza isn't going anywhere, so if you did go the multiple knife route you can always get the CRK down the line. Keep in mind also that less expensive doesn't always mean less quality. Lots of good stuff out there to choose from.

Good luck!

Consider this.. If you want to get the most 'experience' from your dollars, a group of spydercos in similar styles (or even the same) will allow you to sample several different high end blade materials with similar geometries and quality craftsmanship... You could learn a good bit about steels vs your use that way, or blade shapes/grinds vs your use as well if you chose different shapes of blades in a common steel..

Theres pride in ownership of the one Sebenza, or there is some valuable feedback in the group of other blades.. Hell of a choice to make.. Sorry. That really doesnt help much. Lol

I'll sort of play devil's advocate here, even though you seem to have made your choice.

I have several times had the funds (or was willing to spend the money) on a knife in Sebenza territory, but I've never pulled the trigger. I don't like the plain ones, and, its just a weird thing for me.

Instead of buying one, I've always chosen something else. Whether it was because I wanted try something different, or more unique.

I've finally figured out why. The Sebenza has been around for 20+ years, and still remains highly popular as well as easily accessible. I know I can get one at anytime.

Instead of the Seb, I've bought these:

Strider SnG: Just loved the design, and the way it fit in my hand. Sold it because of issues with the S30V. Will own another one with a better steel.
Brian Tighe Tighe Rod Mini--You don't see Brian's knives available too often. Unfortunately, the curvature of the handle along with the size made it a poor fit. I will get one of his larger knives someday.
Three Sisters Forge Beast--Love this knife. Love the design, love that its a small company from the USA. Working in a small family business makes me want to support other small manufacturers.
Southern Grind Spider Monkey--My wedding present to myself.I was gonna spring for the Seb, but saved the money. This knife is far and away my favorite I've ever owned. As I dislike metal handles, the CF is perfect.

I have always been a loner, taken the road less traveled. In the end, I'd rather have something unique and not made in a large factory than what is the popular choice and/or the automatic be all end all choice by the general (knife) community.

I'd go with a Sebenza for one simple reason. The darn thing is so well made that it's easy to use as the yardstick against which you can judge the quality of every other knife in your collection. Whether you end up liking it or not, at least you'll own a knife that features obsessive attention to fit, finish, quality of materials and workmanship . . . the kind of attention that has earned CRK Manufacturer of the Year Awards from Blade Magazine for decades. And you'll never, ever have to ask yourself whether a knife you're interested in is as good as a Sebenza. You'll just know.

Sebenza. Pay once, cry once. One great knife in your pocket beats a drawer full of cheaper knives that don't get used.

I appreciate the time everyone one took in helping me make a decision, there have been many an interesting point and a lot of take aways from this thread. i have read and thought on each and everyone of your individual posts and thus have made my decision... i have decided to buy a large Sebenza.

Hopefully i will find one in the next couple of days! ill be sure to share my first impression with you gents!

Al
