Large tactical folder recommendations

The SOG SpecElite is not much discussed.
There are two sizes--the large is quite big.
The quality is excellent.

Spyderco Military or Spyderco Chinook 3. You'll love them!
In fact, with your budget, buy both.

I would second the Rigbak and would throw in the Wilson Combat Elite. Just picked one up and although not a uber steel, it is 440c, it is low maintenance, is very sharp and is big! Bigger physically than the RB. Both are excellant. Matter of fact you could buy both and still have money left over from your alotted funds to score something else less tactical if need be. keepem sharp

Gotta go with T.K.C. on the customs, or Glockman on the ZT0200...

I also have a ZT0200, and it's a honker!

Hey longbow, I believe that 440C steel on the Combat Elite is a little different formulation than regular 440C, or at least it was when the CE's first came out. Was said to be some really good stuff that took advantage of 440C's strong points. How's the Combat elite feel to your other framelocks?

Eventho the blade is alittle shorter than what you are looking for, I suggest that you take a hard look at the Zero Tolerance ZT 0200. I carry one (I have a pair of 'em), and I wouldn't think of carrying anything else as my primary EDC.

What about that other ZT, with the assisted opening and tiger stripes?

The CE feels in the hand pretty good. It is big and top to bottom height for the frame is very good. It is slim too so it carries very well. The only bitch I have with it is taking it apart. Posted about this too. A bitch to get back together. Other than that it is what is in my pocket now. Extremely smooth opening and closing but has a very good ball detent so it locks closed very well. I think for what I paid for it it is a very good bargain. It is more of a mid tech knife too. All machined made parts in the U.S. but hand fitted and put together. That is according to there web site.

Grip ergo's aren't as good as on the RB, don't get me wrong. I think for the funds spent so far as my frame locks go the RB is hands down the BEST bang for the buck out there. It is heavier in weight than the CE but not as big length wise nor height wise but it is thicker and a more robust build. Both use bronze bushings and are extremely smooth to open. The RB is easier to take a part and put back together too.

I also have the HD7 and this knife carries very well and is smooth to open. But I'll tell ya appple to apples as for frame lock comparisons and only frame lock comparisons I think the above mentioned 2 have a better build to them with stronger/better materials. I mean I'll take solid Ti frame work with overlays of g10 and higher end steel any day. Don't get me wrong I really like the HD7 and am glad I have it especially since it is going to be discontinued and it doesn a have a bit better fit and finish than my standard 7's but not by much. Hey you won't go wrong with any of them.

In order I of quality though I would have to say the RB, CE and the HD7. Just my opinion. keepem sharp

Thanks for the info longbow! Sounds like you like it.

I still say the BM 610 Rukus is the way to go as far as a heavy duty long bladed folder!:D:thumbup:

Cold Steel makes a bunch of Jumbo Folders; conventional lockbacks, switchblade-styled folders, and several others. I'd give them a quick look.

I'm not DITCH, but I can answer the question since I have Rijbak in my edc rotation. I can not really find anything about the Rijbak to complain about. I especially like the deepcarry foldover clip since once in pocket the knife virtually disappears. Have found myself seeking out this type pocket clip as I buy new edc's, and have found a couple that fit with one being the Al Mar SERE 2000 I picked up this past week, and the other one is on its way and is the ZT0500. But back to the Rijbak. The RB weighs in at 5.5 ounces. The blade is .157" thick, with .080" thick titanium liners that provide excellent lockup and are stiff enough not to slip over and accidentally unlock. Don't have it right here in front of me, but I'm prettty sure the G-10 overlays are about the same thickness as the liners. It is a good slicer with its flat ground blade. I have found it easy to carry, and it does not drag my pocket down at all. I definately agree with longbow and DITCH about the quality and toughness of the Rijbak!

I don't think you can go much over 4 inches with a folder, otherwise you have so much leverage that they can break. I had a Cuda Maxx for a while. It's a nice knife, fun to open, but I felt I had to be careful with it. I also had a Cold Steel X2 6-inch folder. Lots and lots of leverage, and the blade developed a severe roll from chopping branches. Later that piece of the blade fell out.

The Military and Rukus are great, as are others a little over 4 inches, but if you need a bigger blade, you should go fixed.

The custom Ray Rogers Chupacabra is probably the strongest folder in the world with a 4" blade.
I have a Spyderco Military and it's nice.
But it's puny compared to Ray's knife.
