Largest and most reputable online knife dealer/store?

Knivesshipfree

Great service, great range (although you won't see brands like Cold Steel), easy to navigate site, and shipping is free!

So is it safe to say that no one here has had any problems with Knifecenter and Knifeworks?

Very safe to say. In all my searching and reading I've never seen a negative comment about either.
Same for New Graham, but you won't find Benchmade at New Graham (long story, don't ask ;)).

No problem with getting an item that is not of quality?

No greater problem than any place else. I don't think any dealer inspects every item they get in before shipping.
BUT, I know for sure (because they have done it for me) that Knifeworks and New Graham will inspect your item before shipping if you ask.
At both places, the person taking your order is also the one pulling and packing it.
Not sure if that is true about Knifecenter.
And if for any reason you're still not satifised, any of the three will bend over backwards to make you happy.

With Amazon you're not going to get any inspection, but you are sure of a no hassle return or exchange.

I just want to be sure, because when I buy online, I am always cautious, and always check which is the most reputable and the largest, just to add that extra security that I get the right item, new, and free of defects.

As you should be. Most anyone can get a web site set up, not everyone can run a business properly.
When you are thinking of dealing with a vendor, a search here and a look thru GBU forum is always a good idea.
I'm leary of any vendor whose web site is a mess or hard to figure out or who doesn't list some kind of physical address.
99% of the time my first transaction with a new vendor is by phone, you can tell a lot about them that way (plus for me it eliminates any who don't have a phone).

I have received rusted blades before with knivesshipfree.com. I bought the knives on closeout so they would not return them. I know the rust can happen, but holding the line on not returning a rusted "new" blade? Come on.

If it were made by Bark River then the knife will still have a life time guarantee and you can have that rust removed.

I am sure there are many good online knife dealers, but I have bought mine from Knifeworks & The Knife Connection with 100% satisfaction to date.

smoky mountain knife works ? any opinions ? I live fairly close "30 miles" place stays packed probably because of high tourist traffic, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

I've asked Knifeworks to pull knives out and inspect them. I hate blade centering issues, and other stuff I won't go into. They'll do it though and are very accomodating.:thumbup:

You could have returned it for a new one though right?

I had 1 unpleasant experience with them and they ship free cuz their knives are marked up for it. :thumbdn: I also hate their store credit only policy. :thumbdn: I got a very nice Sebenza from them and a great deal.:thumbup: I'd still buy from them again though. :)

No. No refunds or returns because it was a closeout. Even though the blade was rusted... it was my problem.

Oddly enough it was Bark River. I had to send them back on my dime. $11 each. Bark River said they would refund the shipping on one of them. They picked up the customer service ball where kniveshipfree dropped it.

There's one word to use when you absolutely, no messing around, got shafted, have to use it. "Chargeback" after I hang up the phone dude.

One phone call to your card issuer freezes the money immediately and the vendor can't have a penny unless he proves he disclosed any of the baloney that some vendors will pass on to us consumers. (not just in buying knives)

This will get instant results everytime out. I wouldn't do this to anyone over something insignificant. If I bought 2 "new" knives that were rusty I would though.

I've never been impressed by their prices or web site.

I gather going there in person is quite a different matter. Many of the members of my local knife club regularly take a drive up there from Atlanta and love it! Great place to visit, and many items that don't make to the catalog or web site.

My impression is that it is more rewarding for the "traditional" type enthusiast, but I might be wrong.

When I order from Amazon, products are always packaged in an Amazon box.

From those that have ordered from Knifeworks and Knifecenter, what kind of packaging do they use? Do they package it in a box or plastic that says Knifecenter or Knifeworks or anything knife? Because as I understand it, some countries are wary of bringing in things that are labeled knives. Or do they ship the knife as is with the original box of the knife (ie small blue box for a Blue class Benchmade)?

Aside from freezing the sale funds the processing bank charges hefty fees back to the seller when a CC charge is challenged by a customer, even if the seller proves the sale was legit.

As far as dealers are concerned I don't know why chefknivestogo.com has remained such a secret. Their selection of kitchen knives is extraordinary, they have a great selection of stones, offer shipping discounts, and usually ship same day.

Smoky Mountain Knife Works is a good place to order from. Sometimes prices are a little high, but sometimes you get a great price. Shipping is fast, I've never had problems with them. And I've ordered from them several times.

They use very discreet, generic packaging and nothing on the label would make one think knives were inclosed.

I only know about chargebacks from being an online merchant. I win most of mine but have lost 3 since 2002 so my processor doesn't raise my risk (read processing rate). Having had to respond to about 10 of them over the years, it's very labor intensive and a lot of documents have to be faxed to the processor and that takes a lot of time.

So now, when I get shafted, I know the merchant has been through it like me and it ain't a pretty thought to him. He loses all of his money or wins which is a crap shoot and has to go through the compilation of supporting documentation as well. In the case of a defective product, he'd lose all of his money, maybe the product and for sure his shipping charges. It's a lot easier at this point to say "send it back and we'll replace it."

That said I've known Mark from the Yahoo! merchant forum for years and he's a good guy and runs a good business. I think "chef knives to go" is probably more associated with those "keywords." He'll start to show up in search for Hand American products in a few months or less because GG takes a while to index the page and then rank it based on authority.

That said, I think I'll shoot him a link to that section from one of my blogs which will give a healthy shot of Page Rank and get the spiders looking at those products. :)

Has any one had any bad experience purchasing Spyderco's from Amazon? I'm asking because their prices are actually very good and I am really tempted?
Or should I just stick with the more known knife online retailers such as Knifecenter?

And I just read at Knifecenter that they do not ship to New York State? Are there exception to this? Like New York City?

What other large knife online retailers don't ship to New York State and New York City?
