last ditch knife

Don't kill me for saying this, but the good old shiv is a good option for last ditch. They get used for this purpose every day by prisoners and they work. Cold steel makes a great last ditch refined neck knife called the spike. This is my choice. Easy to hide, very bad results. For those that are cause the problem.

Not bad theoretically but what if you had to use the shiv and had to justify yourself in court or were caught carrying it by a LEO. You would be in deep shit, a shiv is an improvised offensive weapon, period. The look, name, style, color, and everything else about a knife's asthetics says alot about what it is meant for. A sharp piece of sheet metal wrapped with tape or string is the weapon of an aggressor and a criminal, not an innocent. But, as per your OP I would choose a small fixed blade, mainly a LaGriffe, kabar TDI, meyerco wharning or claw knife, ecos kiradaschi would all be pretty good

You make a good point, but couldn't the same be argued about any knife marketed as a 'last ditch' or 'self-defense' blade?

If an officer finds you walking around with some big black, partially serrated tactical chunk of steel in your pocket, he's going to be way more suspicious than if you've got a sharpened toothbrush.

Personally, this is my favourite last-ditch weapon. I have it on my person at all times and it never leaves my side:

I'm liking the CRKT M21 for these purposes. My issue with most folders is that the hand could slip. The double hilt is really helpful for that, and makes it somewhat viable. Otherwise, some sort of fixed blade, I'm not really sure what, but my Müela Mini-Bowie is nice.

I really wouldn't want to get into that though. If I'm needing to use a knife, it's probably because I've been attacked with a knife. If they're just brandishing it I hand them my decoy wallet. If not, then attacked means stabbed, and I really don't want to rely on my hands for anything after I've been stabbed and am probably going into shock.

All in all, I'm quite glad that this is really only a theoretical discussion for me. I don't need a knife for SD purposes.

then carry a flathead screwdriver... better then a shiv... stronger too... easily explained... personally it would not be a knife/shiv i would pull in a last ditch situtation...

you might wanna work on that, good way to get hit in the face;)

P.S. that looks a lot like some girlfriends, LOL

ok, ok back to the topic, I have a cold steel push knife

I took a look at a few more, I'm thinking an Opinel No 10 with Corkscrew, a Victorinox Soldier Knife or Wenger Ranger knife. The Wenger comes with pocket clip, spyderco like eye hole for the main blade, and a corkscrew. Closed blade but corkscrew in the fist as both a fist loader and a weapon is pretty good. And if you use it as such, you're basically doing boxing, and using an improvised tool. Hard for them to argue that you're carrying a weapon when you didn't use the knife part and did use the cork screw, as that's improvising based on what you know.

My fist is generally my first line of offense, haha- i generally try to avoid stabbing people.

Here's mine

The waved D/E Police is my LDK. In a clinch, everything you have on you is a last ditch tool.

So, with no knife on you and three guys chase you down an alley. You grab a piece of sheet metal from a small construction project going on and fight for your life. That's offensive? The first knives ever in history were improvised offensive and defensive tools. Innocent or not you have the right to protect your own life.

If you improvise an offensive weapon ahead of time then the court won't like you. If you happen to pick up a piece of metal laying around in the alley during the attack, then it's a different matter. The concept is called "premeditation".

Very cool topic!

My issue with most folders is that the hand could slip.

I thought I'd throw this in. With any small blade, fixed or folding, that doesn't wrap the fingers in a loop, the proper procedure is:

When performing a slashing cut, your grip is a normal & firm hold on the handle, always rolling the live edge into play as you execute various cuts.

When executing a thrust or stab, you simply thumb the handle up ever so slightly until the butt of the handle is securely cupped in the palm of your hand and compress your grip. This prevents a run-over of your fingers across the blade as it's anchored to the heel of your palm.

If you do train these minor grip changes over and over for awhile - it happens without ever thinking about it and you'll never fear for the loss of your digits.
