I've been collecting knives for some fifteen years now.

I started with twenty dollar tacticool folders, because I didn't know better.

With time, I learned that you get what you pay for. As my knowledge increased, so did my taste for expensive knives.

But I am not a knife collector. I am a knife user, and everything in my modest collection has been carried and used at least once.

I want to buy one more knife, and then get rid of most of the others. Ideally, it would be a knife that can be used and abused at my job, and then washed clean, ready for pocket carry at one of my son's home school events, or if I get dragged to a wedding.

Does such a knife exist? Probably not. But if I can find one that gets me most of the way there, I'll be happy.

Pay attention, now. I'm looking for suggestions, but I have some wants and don't wants.

1) Blade length of 2.5" to 2.75". Not only for easy pocket carry, but also because 3" is the no-go at my job, and for the man with the badge around these here parts.

2) Black is bad. Unless I can remove it somehow, either with abrasives, chemicals, or aftermarket mods.

3) No autos. Dust is a part of my job, and mechanical simplicity is something I look for.

4) Sturdy is good. Call it abuse if you want, we've all had that discussion before. My knives get used, and if I'm going to spend good money, I want something I don't have to worry about. This applies to blade, lock, and handle materials

5) Customer service is good. I buy Craftsman tools because the few I've had to take back have been replaced without question. If I can get the same in a knife, that alone is worth paying for.

6) Cost is not an object. Like I said, this is supposed to be a "lifetime knife", that I can hang on my pocket everyday, knowing it will handle whatever I can throw at it. This means customs, too.

7) My job prohibits fixed blades. So the Izula and Busse are out. Or I would already have one.

I'm sure this has been done before, but I'm still interested in seeing what's out there.

Two quick questions - 1. what type of work do you do ? 2. what do you think are going to be your typical cutting tasks ? <-- mainly to determine blade shape & best steel

Also, have you considered going custom? If you want something truly special, and cost is no object, have it commissioned. There are a lot of greats out there who could make you something amazing.

i honestly dont think this is possible but for a production knife i would have to say a small sebenza...
maybe you can contract a custom maker to produce your last purchase?

a lot of knives will fill your requirements...FWIW just relating to #5, I would say Benchmade's customer service is good, and Kershaw's is superb. There are dozens of knives from those 2 companies alone that would satisfy the rest of your requirements. I'm sure there are other good companies out there, I just have not had to test their CS yet...

If you only are going to have 1 knife though, it needs to make you happy and be really comfortable to use, the best way to pick a knife like that is in person...are there any good knife stores near you?

For me, if I were to have "the one" in that size, it would be the Burchtree Chubby.

You got a couple of good ones here, I would 2nd the opinions on the Strider PT or small Sebenza. Both come in flavors that would appeal to everyone and both carry lifetime warranties. I don't have the Strider PT, but I do have the small Sebenza and it's a great edc that doesn't scare sheeple when you pull it out. It's one of those knives that goes well with shorts or jeans as well as the suit in my opinion. I haven't had any warranty issues with my Sebenza, but it seems through some of the threads here that maybe Strider has a tad better warranty in ragards to the no questions asked policy. My personal opinion only, I haven't had to contact CRK for anything nor do I own the Strider PT...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Sebenza is probably out due to the OP's desire for something in the 2.5" - 2.75" range. Maybe something along the lines of a Leaf Storm? Custom just might be your best bet.

I think a Custom would be the best choice here as the OP could get exactly what he is looking for.

Go custom. you will get exactly what you want, and, since price is not an option, then that is not a problem.

Thank you all. The more I thought about it, the more custom seems the way to go for me.

I may just contact Charlie Mike, give him my requirements, and tell him to come up with something cool. That way, I would have a truly unique custom piece, and in ten years, when he's a rockstar knifemaker, I can flip it for a grand if I need fast cash!

I say ti framelock.
I also say if price isn't an issue why not get two final folders to have two go to EDC knives?
I carry two, always.

Of course, you could get a 2.5"/2 oz Buck 503 Prince (MSRP $60) or a 2.75"/3 oz Buck 501 Squire (MSRP $63). Both US made lockbacks with rosewood Dymondwood scales and nickel silver bolsters. They come scarey sharp with 420 HC SS blades (503 - .084"; 501 - .096"). Very sheeple-friendly!

More bucks, but Benchmade's new #482 Megumi may be ideal, if a bit short (2.48" x .11" blade of S30V steel.). A button-released liner lock, a la the original 480 Shoki, which is another choice, albeit a bit long (2.89"). My 480-1 is a great pocket carry - in it's sheath, from which I removed the clip. It's bottom, below, witha small plain Sebenza above it, then a Buck Mayo #172 TNT (Ti/S30V), with my Wilson Combat/CRK 'StarTac' Umnumzaan on top.

Good luck!

When I saw the title I laughed out loud literally. A last knife or gun is something I say to the wife but never happens! Go custom in my opinion. Now you have to study their work and find the perfect one for you.
