Lazy Sunday Afternoon. Doc Knife pics.

What, exactly, constitutes a Drs. knife? For example, the Rogers' tortoise knife is a single blade, no spatula, no flat end for mashing pills. Is it merely a long, skinny, pretty knife with premium scales? These are great looking knives but just wondering. Thanks

The tortoise was the first serpentine knife Richard made for me. I would call it a one bladed jack, but just thought it fit in well with the others.
From a historical point of view in general,
a long, skinny, pretty knife with premium scales"
and a sealed cap might cover it pretty well. :D.

I've never been really drawn to the Doc pattern knives, but when I think Doc knives, I think of the Case versions. After seeing those, it puts an entirely different perspective on the pattern.

Those are incredible. Thanks for sharing them

Glad to hear you are almost healed up, and I hope 2011 is a better year for you. Although it looks like you did o.k in the knife department :D

Stunning.

You all have truly brightened my Sunday with beautiful pics of beautiful knives.

Thank you for the great Sunday show.

Very beautiful knives
thanks for showing

This is a Queen Amber bone where the dye has only held in the jigging
I use it as my picnic knife

Gus, If what I am thinking is what others are....you are going to be the worlds richest man..as you have just shown us the first pictures of Heaven!!!
Just ONE of those knives would be immensely satisfying to have.
Awesome...just awesome!

Well, you done gone and did it. I have more knives than braincells and I just ordered a doctors knife. Cheapo steel warrior in yeller. Had to do it. This is what addicition feels like, yeah? :D

Excuse my ignorance, but why is this pattern called a doctors knife? What's the flat, unsharpened "blade" on some examples for? What differentiates the single blade ones from a "fruit knife"?

Back around the turn of the century drugs were kept/distributed in small narrow bottles. Orders for drugs were sometimes accompanied by a doctor's or physicians pattern knife.

The sealed cap was used for crushing pills, sometimes the knife would be a single blade and at other times a 2 blade pattern typically a spatula or pen blade.
The spatula was used for scooping medications out of those small bottles, counting pills (pharmacists still use spatulas today to do so.) or mixing medications.

They really are not that close to fruit knives which typically have silver blades and maybe a less robust construction, more like a "fancy jack" with some more specialized aspects.

Gus, you have a "SICK" collection of amazing doctor's knives. "SICK"...get it? :D

Is there a doctor in the house!?!?

(There, I feel better now. I've always wanted to shout that out.)

Great collection of knives! I've seen and handled a few of these and they are gorgeous!

Nice collection of doctor's knives.

While all great examples a few standout to me,
I like the double scallops on the spatula on Eugene Shadley's rendition. The tortoise shell scales on the Richard Rogers is outstanding.

That's a fine collection and great pics. By chance do you like baby docs as well? I'm rather taken w/ the Case single blade baby docs.

This thread makes me feel less of a man. The nicest collection of knives I've ever seen. Many goats were bartered for those knives, no doubt. I absolutely love the salvaged tortoiseshell.

I have given away a few baby docs as gifts. One went to the doc who performed the surgery on me a year ago tomorrow. I do carry one now and then although I like the two bladed version. That little spatula blade on them comes in handy. Robin carries one every day along with a SAK classic on her key-chain and is always commenting that she does not know how she got along without one saying I am not as worthless as she thought. :D.

You know what the canonical response is if there is don't you? You smile, wave and yell Heyya Doc! :D

Many goats were bartered for those knives, no doubt.

Gus is very protective of his goats...how could you udder utter such a thing!?

;)

Disclaimer: No actual goats were bartered, sold, traded, sacrificed or otherwise molested in the creation and continuance of this thread or in pursuit of the knives represented herein.
