Yes, yes, yes! I have been begging for a Military salt for awhile. I say "salt" because I doubt they would make a lc200n millie sprint without making it fully rustproof and adding it to the salt line. Anyway, to me, a fully rustproof Military would be a bit of a grail knife.
This idea was shot down in the past for multiple reasons.
1. H1 was a Japanese steel. (problem solved with lc200)
2. H1 didn't play nice with liner locks (problem solved with lc200)
3. H1 could not efficiently be flat ground (problem solved with lc200)
The only real obstacle I can see to making a Military Salt at this point would be making sure the hardware, pivot and partial liners were fully rustproof.
One of you photoshop users should edit a picture of the military and give it a salt yellow handle! Just for something to drool over.![]()
How fast would a regular s30v Millie rust or corrode in salt water? Is it the blade I should be more worried about or the hard wear?
It gets surface rust (and slight pitting) in a few hours of constant salt spray exposure.. I use a Military when sailing at times. If the weather is nasty I normally use a Pacific Salt due to this.
I have long petitioned for a Military "salt", but given my uses I have a couple of specific requests. I recently have done some kayak fishing with my s30v Military just to see how much I had to baby it to keep the rust off. After a week I was able to keep the knife rust free and functioning properly but it took a LOT more effort than my salts (which actually require zero effort). The edge itself was the first part to break down. After a couple of days it had completely lost its shaving edge due to corrosion (that couldn't even be seen with the naked eye), even without any real use.
Anyway, here are my ideas. Since using that knife for awhile, I have quit begging for a millie salt until the Millie 2 comes out. What I realized in that week is that tip down carry is a complete no-go for me in the kayak. I carry IWB on the front right and I was always very uncomfortable in the seated position or especially jumping or scrambling in and out of the kayak. If that blade were to open I would get cut in a REALLY bad place. Tip up is a much safer option in that scenario as the blade rests in the fold between stomach and thigh. A lock back is also much safer due to the way the detent works.
I made an interesting (I thought it was interesting anyway) request earlier this year. I asked if they could make a lock back version of the millie in Japan. To me this would be a great seller and a perfect platform for a new salt knife. Basically just an frn Millie handle with 4-way clip and a millie blade with lock back. They could do them in h1, vg10, zdp-189, hap40, whatever. I think it would be a good seller both as a fishing knife and obviously just as a great general purpose large folder.
Actually, the more I think about it, I believe I would like to see them make that knife in Golden. The back locks that I have seen recently out of Golden have been really amazing in their tolerances. Bank vault tight with zero vertical or side to side play. The quality coming out of Golden right now is very high IMO. And that way the knife could be offered in lc200n for the salt version or any other steel they use in Golden. Thoughts?
Watch out Lance! Talk like that and you may look out your window one evening to see a horde of Military fanatics coming after you with torches and pitchforks.
On a more serious note, the Civilian handle is very much like the Military's, and I'm pretty sure it could accommodate a a blade shaped like the Military's. If that could be done, in H-1, it might answer your needs.
Would a police in H1 fit the bill? Not that I have ever seen that combo, but seems more doable.Haha, yeah I hear you Paul and almost added a disclaimer to fend off the angry mob. For the record, I am not suggesting any kind of replacement or even exact copy of the Military, I just think that basic design would make a great springboard or starting point for the kind of knife I described. I like what you mentioned with the Civilian!
