Least intimidating knife designs?

Yeah that's one good thing about California is the knife laws are pretty relaxed. As far as folders, we have no length limit. We just can't carry any switch blades etc.

Our gun laws are a completely different story though.
Other than switch blades, both okay in La., even open carry.

...so old and classic!

Right: Case. Have no idea the model. From my dad and needs to be cleaned up.

Middle: Remington. More tactical, so probably scary. No idea who actually makes them.

Left: Enlan EM-01 from China. Cheap but turned out to be a nice lil' folder. Main EDC knife.

Not to derail the thread, but I have to ask--what SAK is that? I've never seen one with a shield like that.

Yup, of course. The SAK is an Spanish Army Knife made by the Spanish brand Aitor.

Before 2003 they were a true sign of proud and excellent craftmanship, tradition and quality in the country (then they outsourced to China).

From hunting knives to military issue blades, slipjoints and machetes, their wide catalog could be found all around the country, and was used and carried by soldiers, hunters, hikers, aficionados and virtually anyone here.

Their old products are really sought after and a good memory of a bright past in the Spanish cutlery history.

That shield is a reminder of what good brands have we lost to Chinese markets and manufacturers these years...:(

Wouldn't that make it a SpAK¿ LOL

I hear what you're (and everyone else) saying about quality of products coming from China but you're wrong in this case. (I lived in China for many years.)

Companies that source from China (or anywhere else), either from their own factories that they established there or from third-party suppliers, have full control over the quality of the products made there. It is NOT the Chines (or other country) fault.

They can train staff and have good QA/QC processes in and controls in place, or they can move production/sourcing elsewhere. Its their brand, their designs/specs, etc. And if the products ARE CRAP, doesn't mean the (Spanish) company should sell them.

(Buying a Chinese branded product, like Haier or my Enlan blade above, and not like a SAK, is a totally different story. In this case the product / brand / factory are 100% under the control of the Chinese. Is my Enlan knife top quality? No and I didn't expect it to be and didn't pay for it.)

I bought a brand new Lama 1911-styled 9mm piece of crap in 1980s. Blew brass and powder across my face as it fired even though the slide was still open by a hair (Colt won't fire in this condition.) Had it replaced by distributor and THAT gun had its own issues. Where's Lama today. Chinese weren't the problem then, isn't with AITOR SAK today.

FYI: China IS moving up the quality ladder. Just ask BMW, which manufactures its entire line in China. (Yes, they had quality issues and yes they invested in training both pre-/post-hiring workers.

[/Rant over; now back to our regularly schedule program]

If you are trying to walk the line were you want a larger blade, but don't want law enforcement concern, consider the Rucksack Swiss Army Knife. The Delemont SAK's are even bigger but they cross into the really big zone.

Reminds of being in Utah. At a BBQ joint for lunch with friend. Moments later, another group comes in and sit behind us. One had a gun in a "rug", laid it on the table. Mt friend mentioned this, I turn and look, then back to talking with my friend, ignoring the gun as the people didn't seem intimidating to me.

But they noting our collective reaction, got up and quietly moved to another table, without being asked by anyone. Mind you, I HD no issues with it/them and I didn't take my friend's comments as such either.

Moral of the story, try seeing things through to the eyes of others. Not everyone is comfortable with knives outside of, say, a kitchen. Same for axes, guns, and a long list of other things.

That said, maybe in recognizing her obvious state, a calm question asking her about situation and explaining how you use it for work, household chores, whatever, you would not only calm her down, but educate her; i.e. win over someone forming against the idea of carrying a knife. In other words, look at the larger issue as well.

Lastly, know that even within a society, there can be cultural differences. Like in Asia and Middle East, showing the bottom of one's foot is insulting. As an American, born and raised, to me, personal hygiene/grooming should be done at home or in public restroom only. IMHO

YMMV

If I stopped to try to calm down everyone who over-reacted at something I do I wouldn't get anything else done. I live in California.

Just a joke, man.
So much drama for a bit of humor...

I fail to see where there was any drama. I don't own any SAKs and don't know much about them so for all I know there could actually be a Spanish version also referred to as a SAK. I just knew every time I've seen the acronym it was for Swiss Army Knife.

Though I have seen some nice options, I really think you will be hard pressed to find a knife that will raise less concern than a Swiss Army Knife (SAK), especially one with scissors. SAKs are good quality, affordable, useful & make people think of MacGyver. They also have enough options where most people can find a version they like (I stick with Victorinox myself). I think the Leatherman Micra is a close second for not causing concern.

Cheers,

I have an assortment of folders that I carry at any given time. I also carry a SAK Cadet as part of my edc. It's perfect for opening boxes, packages, and pretty much any small task. It has never caused anyone to raise an eyebrow at it. The cadet, a folder, space pen, and a light make up my edc.
