Rather than do an individual threads for projects or tag along on the coat tails of the What Did You Hang or Kirves threads, I figure I’ll try to start up a leather craft thread for axes here.

My first humble entry is a Kirves mask I made for Agent_H Agent_H . After wrestling this monster from him I only had time turn around a quick mask but it sure is fun to work with the angles of these crazy Billnas axes! It inspires ideas for future projects.

As for this one I did a simple wet formed wrap around mask similar to a couple I have done previously.

With the size and length I was a little concerned about it being loose or having too much wiggle. Wiggle!? It came out so snug there is absolutely no wiggle at all! It’s bordering on tight but without torturing the leather on the strap. Perfect.

I went with the murdered-out black on black on black with the dye, stitching, edge paint, and gun metal rivets. So I used super thick black thread so, although subtle, it would still stand out.

So my wife thinks I’m crazy now. Because for the last week I have been walking around the house going “How much more black could this be? And the answer is none, none more black.”

Thanks for looking! Let’s see your projects!

First I apologize for not getting to this Thur. evening . We lost one of thee last four founding members at church. I am head of our facilities team and Co leader of our Security team and on our senior leadership team . I needed to be involved in the planning of the services for Tues. We had to have another lady taken out by the squad today and in my spare time I took the youth to the pond at the gun club I belong to for fishing so I have been a little busy .
my mask are not pretty like many here, but are simple and quick to make. I just got a new supply if rivets I plan on trying a double bit version

Thanks for posting it! The simplicity of the design is cool. Some black leather lace for the cord might dress it up and keep it all leather.
You know like this stuff.

Sure I figured. And please don’t take it as a criticism, just an easy way to give it a different look.
I didn't . I buy bags of leather scrap peices at either Joann's fabric or hobby lobby with the 40% or 50% coupons there was a piece of leather lace in the current bag I have, that I looked at but it was a bit short . That is the thing with the masks I make simple made from on hand material and quick and easy so if if gets lost or damaged I am not out of hours of work. Between my job , my wife doesn't drive and what I do at church time is not something I have a lot of

That's what I was doing, but most of the leather you end up with doesn't finish or tool well at all and for the slightly nicer look I've been trying to achieve lately it no longer works for me.
Getting a stitch groove cut in it or the edges beveled just doesn't go well.

Sorry for the imgur link. I recall having a little trouble getting images on here and didn't find the answer too quickly so I made an album online anyways. Here's a recent build after being inspired by another users axe sling for a vintage finnish axe. Wanted to do a similar build but with a more classic axe cover style. Enjoying how this came out but haven't decided on a keep for the axe flap yet. Hope y'all enjoy: https://imgur.com/gallery/gn1S9RP

That is cool! I’m glad I could actually inspire something. LoL
I’m been meaning to post some of those past projects here.

Are other sheath materials welcome here, or just leather? I don't do much in leather, but make sheaths and masks all the time in HDPE.
I was actually searching web for $20 roll of HDPE. I cannot find the item you described.
Can you post SKU number or link to that store. Recent A17's axe-edent made me realize that I have waaaaaaaaaaay too many axes, scythe blades and no sheaths.
Thanks

The stuff I was originally using to experiment with was by Mr. Garden off Amazon, but I've since sourced some much nicer USA-made HDPE sheet with a nicer surface finish and better overall performance qualities. I suggest 60 mil thickness rather than the 30 mil I had initially experimented with. The Mr. Garden stuff had a kind of pockmarked surface finish and from what I can tell may not actually be HDPE, as advertised, but rather LDPE due to being noticeably softer than the stuff I'm using now, and it was under-spec in thickness. I actually have the USA-made sheeting available on my site at this point, and while it's more expensive than the stuff off Amazon it's still quite economical, and I love the performance I get from it.
