I hear a lot of people on here talk about saks.. and although still popular but not as highly spoken of is the leatherman line of products...I've had am oldschool leatherman wave for the better part of 5 years... It has been on my belt or in my shoulder bag every day... it has been used and abused on a daily basis the whole time and has been my goto tool for the majority of my ems career. this tool is still rock solid... THe blades are still sharp and all the tools move and lock up securely..I think leatherman makes outstanding tools. Just wondering if anyone else's experiences mimic my own...ALso my wave is the old model Without the changing screw driver bits..does anyone know if leatherman still makes something along the same configuration as the old style wave? thanks!

I have 2 of the oldschool wave's. had them for a few years and still strong. i use them all the time. my #1 tool when i go fishing

I have one of the older models. Except for the weight, I think it's a perfect all-around, get-the-job-done tool. Having two blades, a plain AND a serrated solves the old problem, and these are accessible without having to open the tool, they open one handed and lock of tightly. The wood saw cuts limbs quickly and the metal saw does a fair job. If they made it with a skeletonized handle to reduce the weight I'd never leave it home! I never did care for the sheath it came with so I made my own.

I agree 100% I will only use the old school wave, I think it is the original model. I don't like the new ones with that screwdriver bit, useless in comparison. Tough as nails, and never had a problem with it (and I use it as a hammer and prying tool often). If I'm not mistaken I got one in 1999 and used it daily until last year when it got lost. I had to search all over the place and found two on ebay for a really good price. So now I use one and have the other put away for when it is needed.

Leatherman makes great products. Mine always get stolen. Unfortunately, thats been the case for several.

I think most of them are overpriced. Halfords [probably the largest Auto parts store here] carried an identical tool to the Leatherman Micra for about a quarter of the cost. I was snotty about it at first given it was a direct rip-off. However, facts don't always do what you want them to, and in side by side comparison with the proper one I had it was indistinguishable save for mine had Leatherman stamped on it. Halfords no longer carry them [may be they had to withdraw them]. Holding the “rip-off” design bit out of it so we don't muddy the waters, it clearly demonstrated that a tool of that design made from those materials need not cost anything like as much. Provided the fit and finish are at least as good, which they plainly were in that example, there is parity.

I am minded that many of the others have the same attributes – a very overpriced pair of low-grade stainless pliers, that may be useful if you have an exact correlating niche fitting the design of the other tools. I know some have special features, and you may be a lucky one with a 154 blade, but that is my overwhelming feeling. You are got by the plums paying for a name, and in the hope the design is ideal for your needs. Personally, I'd just rather use a set of good pliers and a SAK. Better performance and at least as good a bunch of materials.

I have used them for most of my life. I used them every day in the building trade. They held up very well and I always got more than my monies worth. What more can a guy ask?

I have several Leathermans, and I'm not about to throw them away, but Leatherman has a history of supporting far left wing environmentalist organizations, who would love to take your knives and guns and turn absolutely every bit of wild land into a highly restricted wilderness area!....so I will not be buying any of their products in the future......

I can't go without having a Leatherman tool with me. I keep Waves in the vehicles and now carry an Skeletool at all times. It saves me a walk back to my work vehicle at least once a day.

I love my new Surge!!!
Still have my oldschool SuperTool for use at work.
I once lost it on a fishing trip about 100 miles from my house. Drove back the next weekend to find it right where we parked our truck by the side of the river!!!!!!! :D

I don't really dig on politics here, and I am even less interested in the finer points of US politics, but I did note:

post #11 marks him out as so popular was he for it he had to formulate a "general response" letter

...
That's my monthly quota of political all burned up.

The tip broke off my pliers recently on my Charge TI. Will see if it's covered by warranty...but was thinking about switching to the SAK multitool for a change. I do have several other Leatherman's though and generally get lots of good use out of them.

I've had a leatherman since 98. Carried the Supertool until last year when I picked up a Charge ALX. Primarily for the external blade and better tool opening. Since picking up the charge I have acquired a Wave, Core, and Pulse. I gave the Pulse to a good friend, and put the Core in the car as an emergency tool. I have several friends who swear by them over SAK's these days. In the woods, I carry a Vic Farmer with the Wave as a backup in the pack. In the city, its my Charge.

I've had one leatherman and the first time using (not abusing) them they broke. Living in Portland at the time, I took them to their main office and they were replaced with no question. I then gave it to my ex-wife and bought a Sog. No complaints at all with the Sog.

I try to avoid buying from companies that support my political opponents.

My experience was exactly the same as yours bro, I had the Leatherman Pulse....broke first time, took it back to the store for my money back. I now have a Vic Spirit and love it.
