Leatherman Surge Failure

I was thinking of getting a Leatherman Wave, but after reading many posts about suspect LM quality I will stick with my Powerlock.

I have done the same think to a Gerber tool. Gerber replaced it no problem but it kind of makes it hard to trust the tool.

I bought a LM Core about 2 years ago. Great tool and came to like it a lot. I posted about this in the multitool.org forums so I'll just paste it here:

"It's pains me to write this. It's been only 4 months but after much use, only two drops to the ground, and plenty of simple admiring, my Core has gained a battle scar. (Sorry, pics no longer available)

It's hard to get a good shot of it because my camera seems to not want to focus close enough. I tried colorizing and circling the crack to make it more apparent. The hairline crack is invisible when the tool is closed, pliers in their normal closed position. When the Core is fully opened with the pliers out the crack is then visible. It's right at the end/edge of a handle and is, per the Core's ruler, 0.5cm long. I carefully inspected the rest of the handles and cannot find any other problems. I have no clue when, or how it developed, but I -am- bummed. I guess Leatherman will be getting a warranty call from me." I returned the Core to Ace Hardware and they replaced it with a new one. I ended up giving it away to a friend as a housewarming gift. I was broke at the time and figured it was a good gift. I know it was because he still uses it. I had bought a Victorinox Spirit and loved it except the handles were a little slippery and the Phillips driver wasn't as good as the Leatherman. I would buy the new Vic Spirit model if I needed a multi now.

Get a Victorinox SwissTool. I got one after reading all the multitool reviews I could find online. SOG also gets good reviews for absolute strength, but they have some questionable design decisions. Victorinox tools are very solid and tight, and the steel feels much less springy than Leatherman. (My Leatherman blade was so soft that it rolled with light use. I still use it for small jobs, but only small jobs.)

I don't have a Swisstool, but I have no doubt at all about V'nox quality as I have so many of their knives. There's no way I'd buy a Gerber, but I happen to have several SOG and Leatherman multitools. The SOG Powerlock the the best multitool I've ever had. It is built VERY STRONG, all the blades lock open and a nice thing about the SOG is that the tools are made so you can easily swap or replace blades and the blades can be ordered cheaply from SOG. Also the gears really work and help in using the pliers. I've had the Powerlock for quite awhile and it is my primary tool for most mundane tasks, I wouldn't hesistate to buy another one. The only other tool I'd even consider is the Swisstool.

I've never had much problem with Leathermans, but I plan on getting a Swisstool Spirit. I have an original Swisstool, but like the Spirit's size better for EDC. I like LMs, but feel the quality of materials is better with Victorinox.
