Leaving on a jet plane...

AppleBlossom,
Let us know when he is in country and has a mailing address. I am sure we can arrange some care packages for him and his unit. Don't be a stranger here, it may be cut throat when we are all F5'ing but the rest of the time it is one big family. If Nick needs anything let us know here and we will see what we can do to make it happen.
Jim

Thanks so much. :) The spirit around here sure is wonderful! I'm not surprised Nick's become so hooked. I'll be sure to keep eveyone in the loop if he can't get on to post himself.

God Bless...... Be Safe.......Its people like you that make it safe for the rest of us to sleep at night.

More and more of my young friends are heading off to the war zone.:grumpy:

People I've only met on the BF and people I've worked with day-to-day in the national agencies.

I know all the statistics, I have all of the numbers. Odds are you'll be back safe -- each and every one. I still worry.

FWIW, those of us too old to share the danger are still doing all we can to keep you safe. Every single day.

I've got my eye on you. Come back safe.

I'm finally a bit settled in. I have the internet up and running, but it is basically dial-up. Who can complain about internet in a war though right? So far the most dangerous enemy here is the ice. This entire place is frozen and shows no signs of thawing. One day I'll figure out how to walk on the stuff. Other than that, no excitement thus far. I took a few pictures of the place though, so without further ado...

Wow! The mountain range in the background looks beautiful! I'm actually kind of surprised to see paved roads and sidewalks. I know, "naive Yankee" but I expected everything to be dirt roads.

That being said, I know this isn't a pleasure trip. Take care and watch your back. If there is anything you are looking for in a special offering, PM PM. I'll do a proxy for you.

Take care!

Wow Bro, Not quite a cozy lil' cabin, but what a view! I hope you're keeping those paws and hooves warm.;) I've found walking on ice is a lot like stalking, with more vertical leg movement than usual. Looks funny, but not as much as falling on your a$$. Well, Thanks for the pics, Awesome backdrop! We need to get you a choppin' blade over there for the INFI vs. Ice video.;) :D

Thanks for the pics. Are they of the Hindu Kush. I used to visit Kabul often about 35 years ago give or take. Last time I was there in winter we had to worry about the wild dogs and wolves roaming the streets. Are they still roaming in packs or have the Taliban killed them too or maybe they all starved to death. Used to be able to buy Wilkinson sabers left over from the British Army of the Indus circa 1841. Also bought some khyber knives and interesting damascus steel long knives. Ferocious people, the Afghans, but brave and trustworthy when they are on our side and among the best friends you will ever know.

Good Luck, Keep warm and stay safe
Thanks for your bravery and dedication

The photos are of an American base so that explains the one paved road. They probably have some more in Kabul since it is the capital and as I understand it, there is one good road that goes through various parts of Afghanistan.

The b-hut is made of plywood, which I have discovered is not the best form of insulation. Sometimes I think I'd be warmer if I slept outside.

I believe you are correct about the mountain range. We're not too far from Kabul here. I have seen a number of wild dogs roaming around outside the wire, but I have not yet had the opportunity to go out. I'm not sure about knives, but there are plenty of Enfields to be had here. I've seen quite a few knives, but I think I'll have some trouble sifting through the junk to find anything of note. I'll be on the lookout though. They have a weekly bazaar here that makes for a good time, though everything is overpriced since the Taliban takes a cut of their profits for coming here and selling to us.

And now I must be off to work. Thanks again for all of the kind words.
