Regarding the ice, try to get yourself some Yaktrak Pro Ice spikes, or ripple sole boots. My Bates M-9 desert assault boots work decently well, as do Oakley SI's, but at around -30 it's cold enough to freeze the rubber, then all bets are off. The boots they issue us totally SUCK for walking on ice (even the temperate and cold weather ones). When we were doing our mass battallion formations while on rear-de, we'd stand out in front of battallion and laugh at all the late guys running to formation and falling on their asses.
