Leaving Your Mark.

The best mark is no mark. With social media, you can post your "mark" immediately with zero impact on the surrounding environment. Besides, if you're outdoors to impress somebody else, I think you've missed the point...sharing memories is the best "mark" you can share with your significant other, friend or children. You can leave your mark on the inside of a Port-o-John in any sports game stadium/arena, rock concert, county fair or any other place that is frequented by others...

ROCK6

George Washington carved his initials and date all over when he first came to America as a surveyor. You can see his initials carved into the rock in Natural Bridge VA. I think since cavemen drew pictures on cave walls man has been leaving their mark. Ghetto graffiti and painting rocks aside, I see nothing wrong with initials and a date carved in a tree in the middle of nowhere. Ya never know who the next Father of Our Country is going to be and then everyone will be all about preserving the tree rather than chastising a kid with a pocket knife. Just sayin.

....yes, and we all know what pillars of the country are prezzies have been.

Well some have been better than others, but im talking about a founding father. Dont throw out the baby with the bathwater guys. Its a tree. Or a rock. And it has been done for a few thousand years

Wow, 7 pages on the Environmental Impact of carving your initials in a tree in the woods.

I read them all and I see many good points. I wonder how much environmental damage the over heated server has done to the planet from this website? Or this thread?

I am always amazed at the human existence. Save the Dolphins. Kill the Roaches, Save the baby seals. Kill the rats. The cute ones seem to get the good press.

If we went out and dug up somebody that died last week, we would be grave robbers. But give it some time, go dig up a Pharaoh and we are scientists. Perfectly acceptable.

We, myself included, seem to always adjust the rules to fit our paradigm. I am sure some people here are sitting in a 3,000+ square foot house. Complete with the Central Air keeping it cool, paved driveway, two cars in the garage, blasting some guy about damaging the environment by carving his initials into a tree.

It just cracks me up.

Me personally, i try the follow the leave no trace approach, within reason. Most folks who try to follow the leave no trace approach are walking down a trail, sort of flies in the face of "Leave no Trace" doesn't it?

But I have often wondered about carvings from others, Were they in love? Was she cute? Where are they now?

My reason for even posting in this thread. Besides helping to destroy the environment through computer servers. Is to ask everyone to try and exhibit a bit more tolerance of others. Everyone thinks their way is the right way. And it might be, but respect other's opinions as well.

That's all I have,

It's not about saving " The Gay baby Whales" or the environment, the Earth will be here long after we are all gone, it's about what the next people coming along are experiencing.
I've been going to the BWCAW for 40 years, and it is largely the same, due to the respect most folks have for their time there.
The Bdub gets 250,000+ users annually, and people come from all over the world for the experience. My guess is the last thing they came to see is who was there before them.
