Leek with Sandvik 13C26 at 64-65??

I read about several issues with ZDP Leek broken tip. Do you think Sandvik Leek is better?
ZDP-189 has a very high carbide fraction -- lots of carbon and alloying elements in the steel to form carbide aggregates, giving great wear resistance but at the price of reduced toughness -- while the Sandvik steels have low carbide fractions, making them tougher than many of the popular stainless blade steels.

When I shortened the blade on my JYD2, I had a length of 13C26 Sandvik removed with a Dremel cut-off wheel. Did some informal testing of it, IMO it is very tough for a stainless. At the higher hardness of these leeks I would expect it to be tougher still, though flex less before breaking than at 58-59 HRC like in the JYD2.

I'm very excited to try this high hardness Sandvik and expect it to perform very, very well in the Leek.

Someone out there has good taste and I certainly have to put in my request for one at the Pharmacy if that one is coming. It will be a real winner I can tell ya that. I'm more excited about this one than I was the ZDP189 blade.

I placed my pre-order there today!;)

I placed my pre-order there today!;)

I called the pharmacy and they told me they didn't take pre-orders but to email them (which I did ) and they would let me know when the knife was available. Is this where and how you also did it?

...A nice young lady named Mary Beth told me the same thing yesterday...I emailed her immediately and she acknowledged my email in minutes...Nice lady...:)

I got no confirmation email. :(

...I'm sure they got the email svrider3...I sent out the email while I was talkin' to her on the phone so she just might have been in front of the computer when my email popped up. That was probably why I got the acknowledgement so fast...She sounded like she was right on top of things as when I mentioned the knife she knew exactly what I was talking about...

Mary Beth and Annie have got their act together. Mary Beth was kind enough to deliver a knife to me, as I am on her way home. I can't believe she drives 2 hours each way each day. Yes, they (NGK) are familiar with this knife. She told me that she believed they had something very similar in stock a while back. While technically I guess I didn't "pre-order" as I paid no money, Mary Beth assured me she would email me as soon as they arrived. She also told me she would shoot me an email later this week, when she expects to get in the other two Kershaws I have ordered thru them.

Like I said, these girls have it together, they know their stuff, and they will take care of you. svrider3, if you're still concerned about no reply email, give them a call. NGK's customer service is on par with Kershaw's CS!

Thanks guys. If I don't hear back from them by the time you guys post that you've placed your orders I'll be all over it. ;)
I don't want to miss out on this one. Sounds like it's gonna be one helluva knife.

I can personally vouch for the extreme user friendliness and edge keeping of a 64.5Rc 13C26 blade. Especially since I have a very unique and highly favored Storm II I was lucky enough to be given to test for Thomas. The thing is just awesome and still one of my favorite Kershaw knives.

I have not had the chance yet to try out the Sandvik 13C26 at this hardness - so I can only guess about the performance... but with my previous experience that edge holding comes with edge stability (in my eyes a combination of high yield point, high resistance to plastic deformation, originating from high hardness in combination with high toughness originating from fine grained structure and small sized carbides) and ease of resharpening comes with hardness above 56HRC (for easy deburring) and a fine grained carbide structure (so that the sizes of the carbides are relatively smaller than the sharpening media used for resharpening).

The carbide distribution in 13C26 in combination with this hardness level - that speaks for itself ! - I need one !

I can't wait to read how this performs. I ordered today what is only the second really high quality knife I've owned. I want to thank Tom for all of his time explaining the difference between the S30V and Damascus blade. I ended up ordering the Damascus even though some people on another forum said that for the price it has to be ornamental, possibly etched instead of the real thing. :jerkit: I certainly don't believe that from the first hand accounts I've read from people who have one. So I will try this knife for a bit and if I decide I hate it I'll Try the S30V or the 13C26, swap the G-10 grips for stainless and eBay it :p

This is an interesting run for the Leeks. Is this type of heat treatment something that could easily be done for regular run knives? I'm curious as to why Kershaw keeps their normal runs of this steel at the high 50's.

Sooo, where can I get a peek at this beauty? New Graham has no pictures, and I'm not sure what this "TKS" that svrider3 refers to is. Somebody help me out here...

Ahhh...now I remember who that Cliff character is...
After the total mess this <ahem!> character made of my JYD2 test and review thread -- and just about every 13C26 thread before that -- I plan to do some serious side-by-side testing of this high HRC Leek against my JYD2 and ENER-G2 to hopefully settle some stuff once and for all. Yes, I expect the higher hardness blade to show better edge retention, but that isn't going to change the fact that 13C26 at 58-60 HRC has already proven itself, and has outstanding edge holding.

I'm certain Kershaw has good reasons for what it does, and the decisions made with this Sandvik steel are no exception. But I also really applaud you, Thomas, and of course everyone there at Kershaw for putting out this model so we can all see for ourselves ... and at the bargain price shown on thekershawstore website, no less.
