Left hand question - survey & contest

First choice would be a Starmate, second would be a full size Wegner (in VG-10). I am
pretty much ambi but bieng able to carry a Military in my right pocket and a Starmate or Wegner in my left would be really cool!

Prize choice would be Calypso Jr plain, micarta (to go with the serrated for my right pocket

)

My "dream" Left-Handed Spyderco would be the "Police" model with the full serrated blade. There's just "something" about that large Spyderco, in "Left-Hand"...

.

Since I just "discovered" that there are already LEFT-HAND "Police" models, how about a LEFT-HAND Stainless Endura II, with the full serrated blade?.

.
(I don't think there are any of those, are there?.).

IF I were to win that Calypso,Jr., please make it full "toothed", and in Stainless, and of course, LEFT-HANDED.

A lefty Ladybug maybe????

My vote goes to the Wegner Jr. Big enough yet small enough.

Well,

It seems to me that the issue of a left hand lockback is no issue. If one wants a lefty lockback, send it to your trusted gunsmith, he can tap and install for you.

So, then the issue is liner locks and compression lock models. We already know that the compression lock is manufactured both ways, which leads me to believe that you can operate it either way with either hand, so with the compression lock we have an already ambidextrous lock, now the issue becomes tapping the clip holes. In that case, why not offer it as a service? Lube, sharpen and left clip please! On to the liner locks, a right liner lock can be operated left handed though it is a bit akward. But when speaking of liner locks, we are speaking of only two models in my mind, the Military and Starmate. And after holding a Starmate again today, I would say Starmate should get the left treatment. It has star power, Bob T, and it is a bit more traditional looking and feeling for the conventional folks out there.

Oh yeah, I am not a lefty, though some days I approach ambidextrousness. I do carry a left knife though, currently it is a Wayne Goddard ltwt plain, love that knife. Having a left Starmate would give me another reason to buy that model, Starmate L and Military right.

Hope this helps....

I´d vote for a lefty Wegner Jr. I like to carry a fixed blade on my right/strong side for defense, and a small, innocent-looking folder for utility and secondary defense on my left side. I like the Wegner Jr as a small, sturdy, good-ergonomics utility blade, so this would be my choice.
Calypso Jr Micarta, plain

I'm not a lefty, not even ambidextrous, but hey, a contest is a contest.

Personally, I think something like the Cricket would be great in a left-handed model. It does more chores around the house than any of my other spydies, and that's when I find that I need to grab a knife with my left hand, 'cause my right hand is already occupied.

Micarta, plain edge, thank you.

I agree! A great left handed knife would be the full size Wegner with the VG-10 blade!

My choice would be a Calypso Jr Plain Edge with Micarta.
Thanks Sal!

I've had more paper cuts than cuts from knives, but the knives are QUICKLY gaining!

I think I would choose a Mini-Dyad. I imagine it would not be difficult do do a small run in a left handed version?

I don't mind right handed models- as long as I can open the knife with my left hand. I would like future designs to allow for this- easy deployment by either hand.

Sal,

While I'm not left-handed, I still thought, based on the comments I saw in the "culling" topic, that you consider the Pro-Grip as a left-handed knife. You noted that it consistently sells in highly, and might do well as an all-around left-handed, multi-purpose knife.

I'd also recommend that you do one mid-sized and one smaller blade. For the smaller size, I'd recommend the Dragonfly. My stainless is always with me, and therefore very useful for most cutting tasks.

Definatly one of Spydercos falgships, the Military, Starmate and Wegner.
If I had to choose one of those knives I would vote for the Military.

Being a dealer who has carried a fairly substantial inventory of left hand models, I would say, based on sales, don't make any more left hand models. Either that or offer them on a special order only basis a'la the old C15. This, of course, pertains to the locking liner types as most of the lockbacks can be made totally ambidextrous rather easily.

Spark's idea of a "modular" system has merit as many people like the idea of having a choice in their purchasing.

Left hand models just don't sell and, since we are in business to make a living, it doesn't make sense to stock up on inventory that doesn't move.

I have carried Left hand Police models (when they were available), and it took forever to sell them. I have left hand Benchmades in several models (including Emersons) in stock for over a year and they still don't move. (There is a reason that BM has quit making left hand knives....nobody buys them.) As far as I know, I am the only Chris Reeve dealer that carries a ready supply of left hand Sebenzas in stock and, although sales there are a little better, they still aren't spectacular. I run out of right hand models long before the leftys are gone.

I have seen many posts on this and other forums blasting manufacturers and dealers for ignoring the "vast left hand market" out there and, some, flat out accusing us of discrimination.

I have had people stand in front of my displays in the store and at shows lamenting the fact that "nobody thinks of us left handers". When I show them the several different models of left hand knives that I have in stock, right in front of them, they usually say, "well how about that" and move on. Sometimes I think the fact that there is no left hand model available provides a convenient excuse to put off buying.

Sorry right-brains, I just can't support increasing the left hand load until you folks start helping to lighten the one we already have a bit. We're not a public service here. There has to be an economic reason to stock these things and, so far, it isn't there.

All that being said, though, Sal If you have to bring out some lefthand models, I would recommend the Military and the Starmate. Those seem to get the the most comments about the lack of lefthand models. The Wegners come in a close second although I would caution against the small one. They don't sell very well in the current configuration and I doubt that they would do any better in left hand.

Good luck.

I like to vote for a lefty Military or the future 'jr' Military to be ambi or left handed.

If I win I prefer a stainless handle and plain edge, thank you.

A LH Starmate would be awesome. It seems to me that this knife is very well-liked and is a good seller - but at any rate, I'd pick one model that sells really well and see how the LH conversion does on the market. And if I'm lucky enough, plain-edge Calypso Jr. in micarta plz.

the bigger tip-down right-handed knives like the Military aren't difficult for us lefties to use. I find the small ones much tougher. I'd be eager to see a lefty carbon-fiber dragonfly and a lefty mini-dyad.
should I win, I'd opt for a micarta calypso jr.

I have to 'fess up in support of Dennis...even though I am the spawn of the Devil myself, I only have one true lefty (C19), prefering to live with eg a right handed Police model than to get a lefty when I saw they were available. Methinks a lefty version has to be of a "something special model", hence the calls for a lefty Starmate.

Dennis has some valid points from a retail point of vue. I' ll also have to agree Spyderco should go with the Military. Since there are a dazzling array of variations currently available, the lefty model should be one that is tested in all environments and be suitable for multi purpose use. A lot of LEOs and sportsman/ hunters had related to me that the Military is the "best" full size, lightweight, hard use, and dependable folder out there. I agree. It is one of my personal favorites for a multi use liner lock. (Even after suffering 4 months plus to have a new properly speced out one shipped back from Spydercos warranty dept!)

Just in case I don't win(gasp) are those LH calypso's in micarta available for purchase?

I would go for the staremate - just because it's my favorite spydie.

I would like to get a left handed calypso jr. with a micarta handle and a plain edge please.

Dear Sal,

As I am not familiar with the Spyderco line I had to look at your online catalog. Of the models there I would be most interested in the Frank Centofante collaboration.

If you pick me I'd like the Calypso Jr. lightweight with plain edge.
