Be sure to try a Partagas D4. They're supposed to be gooood too.

Ya - lets just free up them poor people in that prison country.
They would be happier and so would we. Think of all the new beach space for vacations and tiny bikinis! (and unlike Europe they would only be allowed on females!!)

TECHNICALLY, yer not supposed to consume them outside the US either. But the State Dept's reach ends at the US Border. . . for the most part. 
I've had a few. Not worth the hassle or hype when you have such great importable cigars. Some other folk truly love them and can't get enough of them. That's OK too.

Just itching to post here:
Importing/buying, maturing and smoking them cubans is no big deal overhere (apart from the prices, that is). My fav's are the Montecristo # 5 and 4 (in that order), Partagas D4, the Romeo y Julieta Tubos # 3 and most of all: the Punch Punch. Been to that island, experienced the people and otherwise smoked all but a few of the numerous brands. But these are the ones I stock up on on a regular basis.
However, as stated earlier in this thread, there are a lot (and I mean A LOT!!!) of really good cigars from other countries, including the US (or the Netherlands for that matter, although it's a bit of an 'acquired taste' for many to light up a dry cigar). So don't sell yourselves short, there's a lot to say for US tobacco and there are excellent retailers out there to offer support in whatever you wish to try!

Yes, they most certainly are!! However, Dominicans are so called 'wet cigars' so don't buy 'm if they haven't been properly kept in a humidor.
Continuing to supply the US market was (among other considerations, I'm sure...), when Fidel took over, the foremost reason why many native Cuban cigar people went to the Dominican Republic to keep on doing what they had been doing all of their lives: making great smokes out of purely natural materials. The conditions in the Dominican Republic actually are a bit better for growing the different kinds of tobacco to produce the raw material for cigars, not to mention the obvious ease of getting to the right agricultural supplies in the amounts that are needed.
Though the Dominicans seem to have concentrated on making milder cigars that would appeal to a larger public (so sizes are at the very least comparable and in any case more constant), the matter of taste stays a personal one. If I may offer a suggestion: try a few of a size that you like and go from there. And if you are in need of personal advice, ask your retailer. They've smoked them all, believe me

I have come across some very nice cigars from mexico. Excellent value for the price/flavor.
And again - you are at least supporting a slightly better government than the murderous gangsters that occupy the island of Cuba and oppress its people.... Slightly....

What brand do you prefer? I've never had the privilege of smoking one :grumpy:, but from what I understand, Mexico is a rather up and coming country in the cigar producing world and things are looking up for them. I could really use your comment on 'm as somewhat of an intro to them.

But seriously, wet cigar tobacco takes a minimum of no less than 3 years to become usable for anything regarding cigars...
You'll end up having one good high and a terribly long time detoxing from the good stuff.

I have a box of Montecristos in my basement right now. My neighbor bought them for me when he went to Cuba last year and wanted to thank me for feeding his cats while he was away. I smoked one last summer while fishing and it was very nice.
