Lending people your knife

Family only. Both my parents know of my knife obsession, and know how to use them correctly. I work with them, and mom is always borrowing my knife to open the millions of packages she orders. She nor my dad have ever damaged any of my blades. My sister and brother in law however, are idiots in this regard. They've been married nearly five years, and have never honed their Calphalon kitchen knife set. They are so dull that they were about to buy new ones when I told them I would sharpen them for them so they would have to spend the money. They had no clue what the honing rod was for.

My mother, like me, is very mechanically inclined, and so far has been able to figure out every lock system that I have. The only one it took her a moment on was the compression lock. I trust her more than any of my family members with my knives (even my girlfriend).

Every time I lend a knife to someone I end up regretting it. I always offer to cut whatever they need cut, but do not typically lend a knife out.

I learned the hard way ~~ with loaning a Knife and a Weatherby 22 Rifle. Good friend of mine ( x-Marine) was going Duck hunting and wanted to take my 22 Rifle with him to shoot Squirrels with on shore and also a Knife to gut them with ~~ it rained and he put my gun in a case and my Case Knife in a drawer and I did not see him for a couple of weeks or so and I called and told him to bring me my Rifle and Knife.# He did and it was still in the Case and had several good rust spots on the Barrel and my Case Knife was Carbon Steel == ruined"-- one of the first Weatherby 22's and I even remember the price $119.99 ~~ sold it to a friend of mine for $100 ~~ Knife $24.95 ~~ now to this day I have never loaned "anything" out to anybody.!*** I will give them a cheap knife but will not loan one or will cut whatever for them but that is it.^^

I'm cautious even letting people handle the knives- it's surprising how many people can't even put it back in the sheath correctly.

Years ago, I served with the Corp of Engineers and you learned quickly that combat engineers are rough on knives. One day, I had someone from the Commo section ask to use my knife. What could he do to hurt a blade? Commo people sit around and take messages all day. When it was returned, my favorite Case looked more like a cross cut saw than a knife.

I now think twice before loaning a knife.

I always carry a junker knife that let people use. I would never hand someone a good blade.

Yeah, I hate it when people ask to borrow a knife. A quick thought always flashes, "why don't you have your own?", then I've gotten to where I ask what they're going to do with it. Then I try to watch if I can. Lol, I like to watch. Ha. It's always kinda fun too when they can't figure out the frame or axis lock.

I usually try to let them use it in hopes that they'll appreciate a good knife but I'm super paranoid about it. People should treat your knife just like any other item they've asked to borrow. Respectfully. Sadly, often they don't.

More often than not, I will respond, "What do you need me to cut?"

This usually works to keep them satisfied that their problem is being resolved, and the thought that they have to use my knife is conveniently "swept under the table."

Nope, only a select few people that have earned my trust over the years are allowed to borrow my knives. I do however keep spares in my truck or at the hunting lodge that are designated "loaner" knives that have either been retired from my arsenal or I refuse to use do to my knife snobbery. :)

 This!

I too only lend out designated loaners because people do insanely stoopid things with knives (especially ones that AREN'T theirs!)

My grandfather (born and raised in Galveston, TX) has an acronym he made up that he had written all over his camp house on the bay. HOSOB!--Hands off son of a bitch! He didn't mind loaning people his fishing equipment--as long as he was there to monitor them. The house was badly damaged in Hurricane Ike and had to be completely redone, so the HOSOB marks are gone. Still has HOSOB as his license plate though.

If that person didn't have his own knife, chances are they won't know how to use the knife.

That said, I always have a loaner that I could give a rats hind end what really happened to it. Thats because most people don't respect things that aren't theirs, especially know much about knives. Usually its a old Bundeswehr SAK or a Mora. If I'm with people that actually know how to use knives and appreciate them, I'm more inclined to lend it out. That usually is my Junglas

I always say no. I don't carry a "loaner" knife. If you need a knife and don't bother to carry one then it sucks to be you.
I seldom offer to cut, etc...the reason of the request. Much more fun to watch someone struggle then walk away chuckling.
Yep I'm a prick.

My back right pocket is typically reserved for a "loaner". That said, I rarely hand over a knife to anyone, usually end up cutting for them.

That's pretty funny actually. Should carry a plastic picnic "knife" to give them in those instances. Try cutting with that, beyotch...

Nope, people that don't carry a knife are stupid, and I don't lend out anything I have to stupid people. It took me a little while to get that point across to my family and co workers, but now they know and don't bother to ask me such a silly request.

I almost ALWAYS have one of these in my pocket:

Replacement blades are cheap enough, and it's slim and light enough that you forget it's there, until somebody asks to mangle, er... I mean borrow, a knife.

I was once helping my buddy's dad hang a new entry door on the front of his house. We had the door just about in place, and temporarily pinned with some shims. He askes if I have a knife, so naturally, I assume he wants to scribe and snap the shims off.

I hand him my leatherman wave and he folds out the serrated blade and starts moving towards the shims..... when out of no where, he starts SAWING at some plaster that was in the way.

I was speechless. And that's probably the last time I loaned my blade to someone, at least without knowing exactly what they were going to do with it.

Out at work one day, somebody asked if I had a knife. "What for?" I asked.
Them: "I want to pry this piece of steel out of this rubber roll here...."

Me: "ummmm.... NO."

Interesting enough, the guy is a farmer outside of work, and why/how he didn't have his own knife just boggles my mind.
