Lending people your knife

See this is why overbuilt folders exist. My Techno gets lent out. It's got that luscious 5.5mm CTS-XHP blade in what I estimate to be a 75 degree inclusive mirror polished edge stropped to 60k grit.

Easy enough to maintain. Just diamond spray and strops. People have yet to deform the edge enough to make resharpening a chore.

Oh man this happened to my friend like a week after his got his new Para 2. Him and his dad were removing a sink, and there was some left over silicone stuck to the concrete. His dad asked to borrow the knife and my friend, not realising what it was for, gave it to him...

He only had it for about 10 seconds thank god. We saw him start sawing against the concrete with that shiny new blade and it was like time had frozen. My friend let out some kind of banshee shriek. I've never heard such pain..

I carry a loaner, usually an SAK Classic or a Opinel #8 that if they really want to borrow a knife I give them one of those to use, usually I just offer to cut for them.

If they do use my loaner and they like it, many times I'll just let them keep it, either one of those knives are easily replaced.

I cringe pretty much every time I even hand one of my knives to a friend and I can't get it back quickly enough. Just watching them struggle to deploy the blade, figure out how to close it and generally handling it like it's a live grenade is almost more than I can bear. Sometimes I'll carry a beater to lend and I'm happy enough to do that.

I let my girlfriend borrow my rat 1 to open a package and when she was done she took a full grip with one hand on the blade and one on the handle and starts trying to pull it closed AS HARD AS SHE COULD! I snatched it out of her hand as fast I could glad that the liner lock didnt give and have her cut off all her fingers. She no longer gets to handle my knives.

Would you let anyone borrow your wife? LOL Seriously, if I do let anyone borrow it, I watch what theyre doing so I can say "whoa" Not with my knife your not! Or I'll do it for them.

Oh man I know this feeling..... That just made me cringe

I don't lend out knives at work. Most of the time when they ask for a knife they mean screwdriver. I hesitate even showing my knives to others. 95% of the time they open it with a massive wrist flick and then try to close the liner or frame lock by pushing it to the non locking side. Then inevitably I get the "you paid THAT much for a knife! That's crazy". I just avoid it all together. No lending
I had a benchmade got vertical play that way. They did the huge wrist flick then tried forcing the blade down not knowing what the axis lock is. This was a weight lifter that could give lock strength enthusiasts a run for their money After that its a $3 surplus Bundeswehr SAK that they get lent.
I never understood the massive wrist flick. Must be the people used to the cheap gas stations that don't like to open. AT least the old timers I lend it to open these knives like a SAK then get confused when it wont close pressure.

Seems it's the non-knife people that you have to watch out for; they're the serial stabbers.

Thats funny because anti-gun people are the first to say gun owners should be murdered and no-guns are the first to point a gun at somebody and say "pow" when they pull the trigger :D

I've given a knife to those who didn't carry one that I interact with everyday. Enlan, Case, Kershaw, etc. I tried to fit the knife to the person. I gave my wife 2. One for her purse and one for her keys. All those bases are covered. Everyone else is SOL

Sure...

I can't imagine carrying an extra knife just for the very slim chance that someone asks me for one. Heck, there's really not many people around here that assume you have a knife on you, and friends and family are usually respectful to my stuff. But I'll usually just do it for them anyway, or at the very least ask them what they need it for. And if it seems sketchy I'll just watch them while they use it. The most important thing is to explain how to unlock it, cuz there are WAY too many people out there the don't know, so I'll usually stay near by for when I inevitably see them struggling to close it.

Absolutely. One week a month, and I pick the week.

I can see that working out only once per person. You're either going to run out of friends very quickly, or make your entire neighborhood angry at you.

After much research, I have found the solution. Whenever someone asks to borrow your knife, just throw 'em a live grenade instead. Then run like hell.
