Lending people your knife

I'm done with lending my knives. Too many times has dump person nicked my blade. For gods sake..

Had a friend try to close my Mini-Grip by bending it width-wise (basically the same motion you'd make if you were trying to snap a folder in half). Needless to say, she hasn't handled any of my knives since. Also showed my Zulu to some guy who proceeded to do the whole "Give me your money!" routine with it to his friend sitting next to him, who didn't even notice. Blade came pretty dangerously close to touching the guy, so I took it away before things actually got bad. One time, one of my mom's friends took interested in my Mini-Grip and put her thumb on the blade to test how sharp it is, right after I stropped it. Luckily for her, that was my first time trying to strop anything and thus did a shoddy job of it.

So yeah. I don't let other people handle my knives anymore.

I don't ever lend them (except to show to other knuts); this thread confirmed why. If people keep bothering me about it, I'll try to be as polite as possible, but inside I'm feeling like:

(yep, that's me with a machete) :D

If its a friend, someone I know uses knives, or a former scout, I wont hesitate letting them use my knife, so long as it isnt long term. Usually those who ask will know that I'll need to know what they're cutting, amd if it's something destructive, I'll give them a stanley or junk knife.
Otherwise, I can always sharpen whatever happens.

For me, it depends upon what I'm carrying. If it's my Leek, sure, why not? If it's my inlay Sebenza, not a chance.

I work at this restaurant. Many months back, a coworker asked to use my Kershaw Blur S30V. So I have it to him without hesitation. I walk outside and he's trying to cut through METAL straps that were used to secure a commercial grade oven to a pallet. They were thing straps, and about an inch wide. And this moron thought the knofe would cut through it. It wasn't exactly thin either. I was so pissed, he put so many nicks in the blade. I was 17 at the time so $75 was kind of a lot of money at the time haha.

Now no one uses my knives. Not my pm2, ZT 0350 or even my Delica. I specifically carry a kabar dozier, or a Gerber parafram for the uninitiated to use. Because, if they break, or even if they get lost, I couldn't care less

I always ask what they need the knife for which almost always leads me to doing the task myself. I sound like an ass but I don't care. My wife doesn't ask me for one anymore :D

The turning point for me was when I handed my new Benchmade Infidel to a coworker to show it off. After explaining to him what it was and what it cost, he promptly stuck the front of the handle on a table and pushed the switch. That was eight years ago and thinking about it still shocks me.

Someone bet me $50 that my delica could cut through 1/8 inch sheet metal I said it couldn't. Ten minutes later I received a block buster gift card with $50 on it. So if I'm willing to do that with my delica I don't give a beep what people use it for because it's not hard to take a grinder and get rid of chips in the blade or to sharpen it if it's dull.

Um, ok. They gave you a gift card to an outdated video store, so that you would abuse your own equipment. Smart.

I thought BlockBuster went out of business and shut down all their stores. You've got Netflix and all of those DVD rental machines outside almost every 7-11.

I'll cut something for you, but you can't use my knives, period. Get your own, and I promise I'll never ask to use yours either.

I don't even trust myself with my own knives; why the heck would I loan em out to somebody that may be even more incompetent?.... ;):foot::thumbup:

Exhibit A) Chopping last winter in -25 weather on a one inch frozen maple branch. Twist, snap, tears... :foot:

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Someone asks me if I have a knife to cut something, I take out my Delica, they gasp and exclaim "That's a weapon!!", I say "oh, so then u won't be needing it" and walk away...... Apparently lead based paint was a lot more common than I originally thought..........
