Lending people your knife

After much research, I have found the solution. Whenever someone asks to borrow your knife, just throw 'em a live grenade instead. Then run like hell.

That'd be a waste of $200 and a lot of paperwork just to get a point across.

I only let people borrow my knives if I trust them and if I'm watching them.

I make them sign a contract in blood that if they even so much as chip the blade they must repay me with their first born child.

When I was working as a mechanic I kept a pos knife just for a loaner unless I knew the borrower would use a knife correctly. It looked similar to a Buck 110 from across the shop.

If he doesn't have a knife of his own, he won't know how to use yours properly, either.

Not 100% of the time. I have a couple of friends who unfortunately work in in locations that do not allow knives in the workplace. Occasionally, they might ask to borrow a knife if we're meeting for lunch or something and need to cut something. THOSE people, as I know them well, are allowed to borrow one. No one else.

I always say no. I don't carry a "loaner" knife. If you need a knife and don't bother to carry one then it sucks to be you.
I seldom offer to cut, etc...the reason of the request. Much more fun to watch someone struggle then walk away chuckling.
Yep I'm a prick.

Depending on who's asking, I may cut it for them - say, a little old lady in the post office. Otherwise, after having several people do dumb things with a knife I loaned them, I quit loaning them. I have actually started asking "Why should I loan you a knife to cut something if you don't think it's necessary to carry one?"

Yes, I have become the south end of a north bound mule with respect to non-knife people.

You people need to get over yourselves. All the answers stating the if people don't carry their own knives then they must not know how to use one, are kind of ridiculous. I'm sure someone who carries a gun may have the same argument to someone who doesn't. "Oh, you don't carry a gun? You're stupid. Guess you don't see the importance of having one and you probably have no idea what it does."

Also, to the people who freak the hell out whenever someone else cuts something like a can or whatever, calm down. It's a knife. Made to cut things. I'm not sure about you, but I consider blades to look better with some wear on them.

I decide what scars get put on my knives....you can do whatever you want with YOUR knives. Enjoy!

If it's a cheapie, I don't get too bunged up about it.

Put it this way....I regularly carry and use knives close to the 1k mark...and like to keep them looking good. How about you?

Nope never no way. I barely let people even handle my knives, hawks, guns unless they are family or a close friend who knows how to treat such items. It's my personal preference.

Theres no freakin' way im handing my knife to some goon to use, if they dont have a knife why is it my responsibility to loan them one? Besides, most of them arent gonna know how to use it without damaging the edge or something which causes more work for you. I remember one time I was using my benchmade 275 at work cutting some insulation on a construction site, a stone worker saw me use it asked me if he could look at it so I let him, he seemed impressed and asked me "so how much was this, like 15 dollars", I shook my head and told him it was $165, he couldnt believe it! There was another time where a guy I was working with wanted to borrow my knife to pop the little cap off of a flush valve stool so he could adjust the water flow, that would have damaged my skylne for sure and I wasnt about to let him use my spydie manix 2 xl for any reason. Its kinda funny how absurd I think non knife people are but I used to be just like that, what did it matter if you chip out your edge, it wasnt sharp anyways:D

The general public doesn't touch my blades that would require an aptitude test lol. My friends know my knives and the cost of some of them so they don't do dumb stuff with them. I will offer to cut whatever they need cut if I don't trust them with it though.

Lending people your knife:

At first yes, many moons later after broken blade tips, broken SAK can & bottle openers, corkscrew, saying don't cut yourself to the borrower and later having to quarantine my own EDC and then the old, having to ask for your own knife back, because some how they happened to forget to return it to you, lend it to someone else as a second party knife lender/broker or leave your knife laying around somewhere.

In the end, some days it doesn't pay to be a nice guy.

Amen Brother! I once gifted a proto Buck 302 to a friend and within a week he broke the tip using it as a pry-bar.
Normally those that know how to properly use a knife will have their own .

Yes,that's why they sell truck stop knives.:)

I will lend out my Opinel IF I am carrying that. Otherwise no. I will do the cutting myself for him/her.

And another thing, this why it doesn't pay to leave the house without a Jarbenza knife on you for a lender. :D

Disclaimer: Check with your local, state laws and regulations before carrying a Jarbenza keychain knife. :D
