EDIT: I just edited the title...

Just wanted to add I got another e-mail from Leroy explaining the situation. I now believe that he had nothing to do with changing the source of the knives. It looks like the editor - Steven Dick - did it because the other company has ads in TK magazine.

About 8 months ago I got this e-mail from Leroy Thompson:

I just got assigned an article on Mikov autos with a sidebar on the
folders for TACTICAL KNIVES. I have used Mikovs for years all over
the world so know the knives well. I have suggested to Steven Dick
that you should be listed as the U.S. source in the article but am
waiting to hear back on that. Assuming I get the OK, how do you want
to be listed?

Second, I have two Mikov autos--a stag and a Jacaronda wood. If you
are the source listed, would it be to your advantage for me to also
include Damascus, ABS with saw, ABS with openers? I am also doing an
article on autos for military and police for SWAT so the ABS knives
would be applicable there.

If you feel additional knives in the article would be good for you,
would you be willing to ship me examples for use with the understanding
I would return them or purchase them?

The deadline for the article will probably be in about three weeks so I
will have to finish off photos in about two weeks.

If you don't know who I am, punch up amazon.com and type in my name as I
have written 30 books. I have also written for various knife
magazines over the years and am on the staff of various firearms
magazines.

Leroy Thompson

I provided the knives (autos) and additional info about the knives. Also my web site was a source of some info. I requested the article before it was published but got no response. You can imagine my surprise when I saw the article in the magazine (got scans of it from my friend) and saw the source of the knives listed is actually another company. I do not really mind I did not get paid for the knives (and never got them back) but I really feel cheated since the knives and info were used to promote another company. IMO this is very dishonest of Mr. Thompson.

If you recieved NO credit for you cooperation, assistance, and donation of knives you were shafted.

Unless of course Leroy just forgot to mention you!!

Sounds like it might be time to write to Steven Dick and find out what the problem is.

David

PS: And I am pissed

David,

What location were the knives mailed to? I wonder if this was really Leroy Thompson.

If not, it is very odd that he would know that Leroy Thompson was doing an article for Tactical Knives magazine.

I shipped them registered - signature required - and the knife with filework (in the article) is one of my exclusive knives (not available anywhere else). I know the knives reached him and are pictured in the article. :barf:

I'm going to guess there is probably a clause in the magazine that says all knives sent for evaluation become property of the magazine. I thought Steven Dick used to occaisonally post stuff on BF, so maybe a search will reveal some info.

The other thing is if you do a search if tactical knives or steven dick, you'll find so questions about where the magazine is going / how it's run.

Here's a link to his profile,

User JohnnyO or Keith Montgomery might have Steven Dick's email, they conversed via email in one of the threads.

Here's some publisher info:

Harris Outdoor Group
1115 Broadway
NY, NY
10010

Phone 212-807-7100

I'd call and ask for the personsphone number and speak to them directly.

I'm not a lawyer but I think you can and should demand that the knives be returned and that a retraction be printed in the magazine giving you credit for making the knives instead of your competitors. I don't think there is any way they owe you a mention in the article, but they certainly do owe you the product and a correction in print. I suspect the writer probably made a mistake giving credit for the knives to someone else. I doubt he did it intentionally. But, we must all own up to our mistakes.

A couple of weeks ago I had a class in my gourmet store about chocolate. The features editor asked if she could come to the store with a reporter and photographer and cover the class. We gave them seats so they could attend at no charge. When the article appeared, there was not a single mention of the store. They didn't owe me a mention but it would have been a good move to do so in the article and would have made me more interested in allowing them back to the cooking school without paying. We have two celebrity chefs coming this Fall that would make good fodder for the Monday food secion of the paper. As such I won't allow them to attend cooking classes without paying so there won't be any more articles based on my cooking classes. Too bad. It could have been a mutually beneficial relationship. I suspect David won't send any more knives to Tactical. I wouldn't. That would have been a mutually beneficial relationship as well. Ah the vagaries of the media. Sometimes they don't know what's good for them.

Take care.

Wow! This action just doesn't fit the man's reputation. I did have some respect for him, but now I have to wonder. I hope this gets resolved.

I got this response from Leroy Thompson:

The editor changed the info. I had yours, but to make it up to you I
put your info in my new book on COMBAT KNIVES and also in the article on
automatic knives for SWAT. I still don't know why they changed the
info in TK.
Sorry, Leroy

So I will try to get the editors e-mail and telephone number and ask him WHY he had to re move the info.

Send the Publisher a bill for the knives and a written request that they print a correction.

Sorry, I didn't save any of the emails I got from Steven and I never put his email address in my address book. Wish I could be of more help.

Something looks fishy here.

I think at this point I'd say give me the knives or the money for them.

DOn't let yourself get sucked into yet another scam.
