Contrary to my original fears, the DJs did a great job interviewing Les. They asked good questions, and allowed Les to talk.

Just a few notes from the interview:

-Yes, he's alone when filming a show
-He always carries a satellite phone and a 2-way radio fro safety reasons, but he says they don't work worn a darn under a jungle canopy.
-in the Kalahari episode (one of the new episodes coming up), he had a real bout with heat exhaustion. He stated that was the most dangerous time he has gone through while filming the show.

The radio guys asked Les what would be his top 5 items that he would carry on a trip into the outdoors. Les' 5 items in the order he named them off:

-Fire starting gear; items to guarantee you can start a good fire
-A really strong knife. He suggested a belt knife
-Orange garbage bag that can be used as a tarp
-Something you can boil water in
-And either a length of rope or an axe; he said "You decide." He stated that either one would be useful.

One of the radio personalities asked him if he'd be comfortable with only those items in the wilderness, and Les said something to the effect that yes, he'd be extremely comfortable.

They also asked Les if he was aware of the 'fake Survivorman' out there. One of the radio guys mentioned 'Bear Grylls.' Les was a true gentleman, and didn't dish the dirt or directly trash Bear. He did state that he didn't know Bear, and he has never met him. But Les did say that you can't depict survival with a crew or by staying in hotels, and that's the reason he goes out alone. He said that with a crew, you always have commeraderie, and it's too easy to say to a crew member, 'Hey, can I have a bite of your Mars bar?" Les believes that a significant element of depicting the survival situation is conveying the loneliness.

There was more to the interview, but I couldn't type as fast as the topic were flying by. It was a good interview, and I feel the station did justice to Les. I can't wait for the new Survivorman episodes.

I find Les's 5 top items interesting. Expecially a strong belt knife since he always carries a SAK or a Multool (VIC or Leatherman) in Survivorman.

DeadeyeLefty, Les was interviewed by Bob and Brian on 102.9, the Hog, out of Milwaukee, WI. The show is available everywhere through the Hog's website. I'm sorry I didn't think of that before.

Bob and Brian aren't your typical morning zoo yuk-yuk type radio show guys. Brian makes it a point to incorporate some aspect of history or sience into the show each day.

When he said 'a strong knife,' Bob (radio host) said, "A strong knife, like a bayonet?" Les said not a bayonet, but a decent knife, like a belt knife. He made no mention of SAKs or multitools, nor did he state a specific knife brand or size.

I think he do this to more closely simulate an average lost hiker. He doesn't have any of this five things in hes shows. (well except the firemaking kit sometimes)

In a few interviews he's mentioned the Buck brand, and he's said he's owned his for 20+ years, but has had to regrind the tip some . That makes me think that it's either one of the black handled fixed blades or a folding 110.

I like Les, he seems like a down to earth guy who actually knows what he's doing out there. A bayonet, lol!

Really interesting synopsis of the interview. I hope Les become well known enough to be in demand for more radio and TV appearances.

When "Survivorman" first aired on TV, I was impressed with reservations. But when "Man Vs. Wild" appeared, my criticizms of "Survivorman" paled into insignificance. Grylls fake heroics and geeky behavior make Stroud look authentic by comparison.

I'm really looking forward to the new episodes of "Survivorman".

I think les seems like a guy i want to have a few beers with and talk survival.

BTW, is there anymore of those forum survival knives?

One tidbit I forgot to mention from the interview:

The hosts asked him if he filmed all the new episodes back-to-back. Les stated that filming an episode really taxes his body, so he'll take a decent amount of time off between episodes. He said that in between filming episodes, he pursues his 'rock star' lifestyle. He dosn't just play harmonica in the Survivorman episodes to annoy us :p, but he actually writes music and has a band. I listened to samples of his latest CD a while ago, and I liked what I heard. He's a pretty talented guy.

Thanks MG. That's the correct site for the podcast. The podcast for 8/9 is an interview with Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Chris Capuano (Cappy). That interview was from yesterday. I'll guess that the Les' interview may be posted tomorrow.

very cool info. .. :D thanks..

i've always liked les myself..... he's has a very mellow attitude......

for some reason, I always just assumed that if Les actually did comment on bear it would be extremely reasonable and tame. He just seems like that kinda guy.

Les is a very likable person and his shows seem to be more oriented towards actually putting out solid information instead of drama. I watched one of his shows about getting stranded in a vehicle and learned a lot, also enjoyed his urban survival show thought it was important that he told you what in the fridge to eat first and how to preserve some things longer without power. I have caught him in some fudges but they are much more subtle and not anything that would get anyone hurt or really even mattered to the plot of the show. I am really looking forward to tommorow night, I went to his site and read his blog and am really interested to watch the show. Chris

I like Les alot. I respect what he incorporates in his shows. In real life situation one would want to exert as little energy as possible in other words be efficient with his actions. Sometimes in his shows he even makes mistakes and I like that, because in real life a person does make mistakes even experienced people. I can't stand the other show simply because he does things typicaly a normal person would do. But it is intertaining though.

I agree completely. To the degree Les "dramatizes," it's to make the teaching moment better, not to make it appear glamorous to jump off a sea cliff wearing a parachute woven from palm fronds, or whatever...
