Les Stroud Camillus Knives- ?!

The news release was focused on the marketing aspects. It just HAPPENED to be "Survivorman" and a line of knives. It is not the product or the quality. It is all about DEMAND for that product and the potential profits from the sale of that p.roduct.

That press release was for Acme stockholders (current and potential). It really had "nothing" to do with knives.

That's a tough one. It takes a real "set" to slap the word "Smatchet" into the name of a knife and pass it off to the posers. Like take a bunch of cheapo slippes and call them "Micro Pocket Smatchets." That's a tough sell, especially without Fairbairn around.

What I'm looking for is something "Rambo." Like Kevin Costner does some "pioneer" kinda blockbuster movie with a knife in it, then I take a bunch of any old cheap knives, beat on them with a ball peen hammer, throw them in the Weber grill for a while, and sell them as "Marcinek Pioneer Brand."

That's the kinda "sexy" I want to be ahead of. You and me 555, we will make a ton of coin.

LOL :D

I like the idea and I think before someone else reads this, you better apply for a Patent on your Heat Treat method. :D

I would Elaborate, but I received a phone call while reading this and have to go off line.

I like that machete. At least there is a pounding pommell. I wonder if they are scandinavian ground.

For what I have seen on the show, Mr Stroud isn't really a knife guy. In the africa episode he brought a black rambo knife "because of the lions".
I agree. I think most guys who do this thing aren't into knives beyond what the knife can do for them. I know Lundin is the same way. They're just tools to them like a hammer is to most of us.

To be honest if the handles hold up and the heat treat is right I don't think these would be all that bad at the presumeably low price point. They're just fugly. :D

More survival tools will be launched early 2012. This is an ideal timing, as the fourth season of Survivorman, in which Les Stroud will use the new Camillus knives, will air in the summer of 2012.

This and the video, haven't heard that one in a loooooong time!, were the best things about this thread! :D I admit I don't follow Les on the Web so I didn't know about his Survivorman return so this is great news to my ears.

The blade on the knife looks OK, but the handles are horrible looking. Like Ginsu kitchen knife horrible. I have no clue about that machete thing. It doesn't seem to make sense no matter what angle I look from. At first I thought it was a long, narrow cleaver then realized it went the other way, like a giant, recurved tanto! It looks like they photoshopped it into the photo with him. I really like Les and will continue, but this whole thing hurts:(

It looks like the machete is upside down in his hand, at least if the wide, flat edge in the picture of the knive by itself is the spine. I'm not real wild about the look of the handles, but I'll reserve judgement on the knives themselves until I can see them in person.

I like the designs at least... a little flamboyant but would look nice strapped to a female white and lime backpack-there are a dozen companies making them in that color combo at the moment. Lots of molded plastic and Chinese stainless steel, not unlike the Grylls fiascos... will probably pass these guys by.

The Helle knife is already out. It's called the Temagami.

Yes thats it and it's a nice looking knife. But it's a Helle and I don't see it being heads and tails over their other production models and are less than half the price. Guess you pay for the name, but, it does fall in line with his craft and to me was a much more appropriate decision than these. HAs there been any mention as to what the handles are made of? They look pretty cheap.

Marcinek,

What do you marinate your blades in?? I propose 'A1 Bold and Spicey'. Perhaps, a Char Broil could be substituted? Wait... my yuppee eldest son has the perfect heat-treatment - a Big Green Egg! The ultimate in smoker/cookers... if you want everything to taste the same. Not me. I still prefer the microwave. My Buck 119 sure did create some lightning when I tried zapping it...

Les Stroud can't be faulted for wanting to make a few bucks. Living 'off the grid' in Canada can't be cheap...

I am a big fan of les stroud. If you whatch survivorman he often uses cheaper canadian tire type knives. so it is possable that he doesn't see whats so wrong with the knives himself

I always figured he tried to use gear and tools that a typical person (meaning "not us") would have for the sake of realism in his scenarios.

These knives are ridiculous. However if there is anything good about them, it is that they will provide a gateway for more than a few folks into the world of quality edged tools. How many of us started out with goofy, cheapo stuff?

Looks like a Bush-Ninja knife to me.

Getting pretty sad this celebrity knife endorsement thing . :barf:

There is no reason for a survivor show to have its own knives other than making extra money. There are a ton of knife companies who make great knives without prior tv experience, and I doubt les' woodmanship is a better grantee for quality than twenty years of research and development.

Gotta make that money! He is not getting any younger and I am sure the line of clothing at Wal-mart is not far behind. He has also been a writer for Backpacker magazine for a long time. I still respect the man.

I will reserve my judgement of this line of tools until either myself or a reviewer I trust can actaully handle them and try them out.
That being said, I am going to assume that Les Stroud had input on the design and has attached his name to this product, that they are going to be an affordable, functional, usable knife that will cut things.
Les Stroud, in my understanding of the man and his character, is not going to endorse a product for purely financial reasons.
I just don't beleive he's that type of guy.

Lol,more knives for the you tube destruction tests.Get you're popcorn and beer.

My thoughts exactly!

"carbonitride titanium non-stick technology"

Thank goodness someone has finally figured out a way of heating appetizers outdoors, on a knife blade, without leaving that sticky mess behind on the blade. :D
