Lesson Learned - How NOT to Ship

And yes he essentially is blaming the seller - read the title - that pretty much says it all.

I did read the title , "Purchase Disaster"... according to the OP brown paper towels were used for packaging, no mention of bubble wrap or any other packaging materials.

You're quick to point out that the OP has not given specific details on how it was packed, neither has Tomahawk and until or if we hear from him, all we have to go on is what the OP said.

There have been countless threads started on sellers and their pathetic attempt at packaging, this seems like another one.

I've sold a few items on here ;), once I receive payment that item is no longer mine. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I feel that it's my responsibility and obligation to see that the buyer receives their property in a timely manner, packaged properly... brown paper towels... as I said, lazy, cheap and careless.

On the receiving end, I just received two knives from different sellers from another site that were only in padded envelopes. These were $180 and $250 knives with the box condition affecting their value. Luckily they survived okay.

I've started wrapping my knives in plastic wrap inside the package for just this situation. Actually a fellow member recently was having fun with me for my excessive packaging of a pass-around knife. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads...posts-22-and-23.1526786/page-11#post-18002729

that’s exactly the way I pack. Anytime I buy something I make sure that they ship it with adequate padding and not just some envelope. Its shame I have to do that, but that’s the way it is.

Perhaps we will disagree, but as a mod would think you would want all the facts before you call someone cheap, lazy and careless . Fact is we , and you do not know all the details of the packing . Did the OP contact the seller? What was the packing in detail? Would a reasonable expectation of packing include assuming the carrier would let it in a rainstorm? Run it over by a truck? Someone put a 50# box right on top of it?

Now the seller is obligated to make sure the item gets to the buyer in good order . Yes .
However, they are not a lazy slacker because of the carriers stupidity . They just need to make it right .
Need more info from OP and seller .

Sorry bro, but you are off base calling one person names before knowing all the facts and both stories. Wait for it .

Bought a knife from Tomahawk6442. WHAT A DISASTER! I just found the USPS box on my front steps, the cardboard soaked and falling apart, the poorly wrapped with brown paper towels leather sheath was also soaking wet, and the knife blade coated in rust! This is why I always post the USPS tracking number (Tom never provide one, said he lost it) so the buyer can keep tabs as well as to properly wrap knives and sheaths separately in plastic bubble wrap thoroughly taped or at least in a baggie.
I suggested that he (and others) do the same.

Have you told the seller that you're going to open a thread about him?

Let's hear his side.. What say you @Tomahawk6442 ?

Perhaps we will disagree

It would seem so.

If you have any more comments directed specifically to me, take it to PM please. I don't want to derail the OP's thread with this back and forth thing we seem to have developed.

In defense of the seller, to whom I have NOT applied any of the names or adjectives some here have used (and did NOT leave formal negative feedback score for him on purpose), my post was to factually describe my own PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and provide some helpful tips to him and others to avoid similar unfortunate incidents in the future.

And, yes, I have been in touch with the seller who apologized and thought that the USPS would have put it in a mailbox (I have a small one in an outdoor multi-box neighborhood stand) which would definitely have helped the situation a lot (but I guess we can't always depend on every USPS employee to do the right thing every time, another lesson here).
As to questions some have raised regarding additional information about the packaging, as I said, it was in a soaked, slightly torn (and a bit muddy) white cardboard box (11" by 2" by 3.25") with a USPS Priority Mail address label and some USPS Priority Mail tape with only soaked brown paper towel-like material falling apart along with the soaked maker's certificate which extracted in three pieces, no other wrapping or tape, the knife in the thoroughly soaked sheath, which, when removed, had its blade coated in a thin layer of rust.
Frankly, I'm more focused on the resulting condition of the knife and its sheath I received than the specific packing details. And I do wish the seller had provided me a tracking number as I SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED, or at the very least a shipping date, so that I could have better anticipated its arrival. I hope this answers all the questions you all have raised. Again, my post was to factually describe my own PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and provide some helpful tips to him and others to avoid similar unfortunate incidents in the future.

The tracking number issue is sort of negated by USPS' new tracking system tools they offer. It's been pointed out already, but we now live in a time where USPS can tell you a package is on its way regardless of what tracking info you were given as a client. All you have to do is look into it. Couple clicks or taps, its easy. I just tried it for the first time today, even. Cool stuff.

Here recently we've had tons of regional rain, so if you're in that region I have an idea of the amount of rain you might have gotten over the course of a half day on some of these recent days... Not many packages at all would fare well in those conditions. I know its a frustrating PITA thing to happen, but you know what they say about wisdom gained thru financial loss... It sticks around, ya know?

Attn: all mail carriers, please dont be idiots! if you need an umbrella, the box needs a bag.

Edit to add:
I just pulled a knife box..... out of an envelope.... Damn it.

Frankly, I was pissed as hell (and you would be, too!), but I tried to leave emotion out of it and simply state ALL of the facts.

You know when you open up a thread in GB&U with someone else's name in the title, it is either positive or negative and VERY rarely neutral. Reading your thread title alone, it is negative no question about it. So it really does not matter that much no matter how you explain/spin in your post(s). Nonetheless, the more important question here is, as someone already pointed out, did the seller drop a soaked and crumbled package at the USPS office? If not, I hardly see why he should be the blamed party.

By the logic of some of the people posting in this thread, good dealers like BladeHQ, Knifeworks, and Knifecenters are all lazy as I don't see they bubble wrap the factory knife box and then tape wrap the entire mailer package. I am fairly certain if their packages were left in open rain for an extended period of time, the result would not be so different from the one in this thread.

I'm so sorry - this being my first post in GB&U after more than 10 years of BF membership, I wasn't aware of the etiquette regarding some people's delicate sensibilities, much less their self-ascribed superiority . . .

Thanks to the rest of you for understanding my ire.
