let me see your fishing kit

Here is an article I wrote on the standard Military (Survival) Fishing Kit. Add "Life-Like" fishing lures, ants and crickets and replace the monofilament with braided nylon and you would have a good great kit!

I patterned mine after a YouTube video by the gentleman on Dual Survival (sorry I don't know his name). I used a larger plastic pill bottle 1.75x5.5, around which I wrapped about 25ft of 14# mono, poked a couple of holes in the cap for para cord wrist thong, and it underhand casts pretty well. Covered the mono with some heavy duty clear tape . Inside added half dozen #4 (small hooks), small top water popper plug, spinner bait, some colored fabric to make a fly, couple of snap swivels, small bobber, and a white plastic worm. A 6/0 hook and sheetmetal screw to make a small gaff, an assortment of split and small egg sinkers, second longer wrap of mono to make a traut line, some 2/0 hooks if I get lucky, and a couple of treble hooks with steel leader to make small animal snare...I know there is probably better braded line out there, but I had the mono...regards Les

I would just say to be sure and add some different size circle hooks as they are designed to hook a fish when you can't "set" the hook, like when using limb lines.

Here is my mini fishing kit, so far, its missing a 1mm drill bit and glow sticks for float making.

spoons spinners jigs weights bobbers a couple different combinations of plastics (snubtails, worms, twister tails, squid, etc) and maybe a small Rapala, combined with some hocks of applicable weight fishing line and various sized hooks... I bought one of the 20 dollar starter kits on ebay and added and subtracted what I wanted. It all fits in a plastic organization container. about the size of my hand.

Excellent small kit for the UK, particularly the wire trace because many waters contain pike. I don't mean this as a criticism but you need larger hooks for those curtail grubs, try getting the special hooks for fishing plastics, they ride close to the body and are fairly weedless.

Me? I'm a rod and line fisherman!

Thanks Yorkshire Boy glad you like it, and yeah it is based around UK waters something you and i will know. There are 2/3 larger hooks mixed in with the hooks on the right, although they could be bigger, i,ll look into those, cheers bro

and it's contents.

Nice kit skab, that will definitely catch fish in Nebraska. I'm from North platte and used doll flys and twisters and always caught fish on them there.

Have you ever caught anything off that beercap lure?

Here is what I have on an in it:

1) 50 yards of 6 pound test and 50 yards of 12 pound red test line on the outside - tied to a ready hook, sinker, bobber stop, and a Thill strike marker. This is always ready to fish.
2) 9 yards of one inch duct orange tape on the outside - for general use - but to mark drop line positions.
3) 12 Assorted hooks: 3 size 10 gold and 4 size 12 bait holder hooks.
4) 10 or more split shot sinkers
4) 3 Treble hooks for drop lines.
6) 3 curly tail lures (3/8th ounce waited head)
7) 6 curly tail lure replacements (3 different colors: Chartreuse & Black, Pumpkin Seed, Blue & Silver translucent)
8) 3 pre-tied bobber knots and beads.
9) a small styrofoam bobber
10) A screw eye to make an expedient fishing pole out of in the field.
11) A few wet flies.
12) A few spinners and rooster tails.
13) Two bobbins with 50 feet of 72 pound spyder wire for drop lines.
14) A baggie of Gulp bait in various colors.

Oh - That is a 14" Blue Gill caught in Michigan on the hand line with natural gulp.

Should have said it earlier, but my kit was inspired by Talfuchre. Got to give him credit.

I have caught many fish with the bottle cap lures, white bass and wiper love them. Have also caught a few crappie and rainbows on them.

banana-clip Great minds man ,I saw that protein drink container and had to use it for my fishing kit I don`t have any pics yet it still needs some tweeking .Nice kits guys I love how you all have a handle on what to use for your area have any of you made a fishing kit for away from home?

There are some really great mini-kits here. Of all the items I have packed for emergencies, my compact fishing kits get the most use if I'm hiking anywhere near a lake or a small stream.

The soda-can or tube caster is really effective. I like the Tube Vault's as you can actually store lures, hooks, extra line, etc. inside...a very compact and effective kit!

I got to say that Scab's beer-cap lure gets the price for the best innovation:thumbup::D

Somebody questioned the inclusion of safety clips in your fishing kit. I don't think they're a necessity, but they do offer better organization of your hooks. Once separated by mini-safety clips, you can wrap in aluminum foil so they lay flat and don't snag everything...keeps you from losing them too. Also, you have a couple larger ones, you can bend the spring end about 45 degrees and tape/wire onto a small stick/branch...it'll give you an eye to extend you line easier; again, not a necessity, but makes fishing in some areas a little easier.

Do be careful of the plastic worms and plastic poppers; they will melt in hot temperatures and make a mess of your kit! Also, don't forget a few treble hooks; once baited they can be much more effective than standard hooks!

What are the little spools I see in some of these kits? I have just the basic wrap line around a small bit of cardboard action going, those spools look much handier.

I'm very interested in making a pocket fishing kit and I really like the tubes you guys have used. Dave Canterbury had a video on how to make one and someone posted a followup vid making one out of pvc. I've never seen a protein drink tube at Walmart or any other store but that tube sure looks handy! If I can't find one soon I guess I'll go the pvc route.
