let me see your fishing kit

What are the little spools I see in some of these kits? I have just the basic wrap line around a small bit of cardboard action going, those spools look much handier.

Bobbins are the easiest way to carry line. If you want to carry more line, here are a couple of different size bobbins for big sewing machines.

These are both about the same width, but they're about .05'' wider than your standard bobbin you get a WalMart.

This one holds about 150 feet of 35lbs test braided line, or about 60 feet of 80lbs test braided line. It's 1.087'' in diameter and about .46'' wide.

This one is about 1.45'' in diameter, and .51'' wide. It holds A LOT of 35lbs test braided line. I never actually measured it because it's just A LOT. It will hold about 100 - 125 feet of 100lbs test braided line which is a little thicker than the inner cords of 550 depending on the brand of braided line you use. I like this size of bigger bobbin for thicker cord than fishing line but not as thick as 550. I think that is a VERY handy size line to have in small kits, and this is a way to carry a lot of it cleanly.

When you wrap line around any bobbin, stick a small machine screw through the hole, and snug up a nut on the other side. Then chuck up the end of the screw in a cordless drill and wrap your bobbin on low speed. Take a coat hanger and cut it in the middle and hang your spool on the coat hanger and the coat hanger off of a nail or whatever. Now your spool of line can easily free spool and feed your bobbin with no twisting at all.

You can wrap A LOT of line evenly and without twisting it in under a minute. Use LOW speed because if the line slips off the spool, it wraps around your chuck FAST and it's a mess. Hit reverse to keep the twisting out of the line.

Schmittie look at walmart or maybe any large department store and look in the isle with the protein drinks, protein bars, slim fast and stuff like. They are 2 or 3 dollars I can`t remember But they are really nice I don`t think they are a tough as the clear soda bottle containers but I dodn`t feel like buying one of those and paying for shipping also.

You want to find a Met RX Energy Shot. THey can be had a Vitamin Shoppes as well. They are NOT as tough - but SO much more roomy - and frankly - the Pre-Forms are almost TOO thick.

Here's one I made.

Even with standard spinning gear it took me a while keep fishing line untangled.

Do those small bobbins form the fishing line into curls that cause tangling?
Even small tubes that you wrap line around might do likewise.

Is there any particular braided line that you recommend?
Does it curl less that monofilament?

Why not have leaders already tied to hooks?
Do you use leaders?

That's pretty cool Silas. I like the separate container for all the hooks. Good idea!

IMO, mono will take on a small diameter coil when wrapped on the cotton bobbins. Since I have a rubber band around another small container within my FAK, when I use the fishing line I pull it through the pinched together band when I'm taking it off (I find it removes the coiling  )

Even full sized handline reels will eventually give mono a coil (although the coils will be much larger in diameter), so I would imagine mono on the small tubes shown would also develop coils over time (although not as tight a curl as the bobbin).

I haven't used all the brands of braid so I can't recommend one. The one brand of braid I do use on my spinning rod doesn't seem to want to coil up like mono does.

I really don't use leaders when I'm setting lines with the pictured kit.

Kind regards

Lots of good kits and tips
Here is my contribution I have mentioned a while back

"Brad's backwoods bobber"

In small kits bobbers can be bulky

keep a couple 1 to 1.5 inch strips of surgical tubing in your kit

when you want a bobber just trim a branch tapered smooth on both ends, cut one piece of tubing in half and run your line through both.

A bit of carving can make nice ones easily and will have real weight for tossing.

Fit the tubing pieces on the tapered ends and your done.

Does not crimp the line, slides to adjust for length and you can weight it so it stands up at neutral bouyancy, the fish just swim away with it without feeling the bobber.

With the spare piece, a hook and split shot you can also make a tube jig, slash the ends for a skirt, add a bit of red cloth as well.

Also with winding line on bobbins it gets bad memory curls.
Wet a piece of tubing with saliva and pinch the line with it, then run the line through with some pressure. It will straighten your line nicely.
Been doing that on my flyline leaders for 25 years or so.

(missed that part of your post Southern Cross, but try the tubing it works much better and you can get good pressure on thicker line, plus the bobber aspect)

so many uses for surgical tubing in survival kits as well, drinking tube, improvised slingshot, tournaquet. I keep a 16 inch piece in the frame/backpad in my packs.

Here is an article I wrote on the standard Military (Survival) Fishing Kit. Add "Life-Like" fishing lures, ants and crickets and replace the monofilament with braided nylon and you would have a good great kit!

much appreciated if you could provide a link to where you found it. thanks.

Brad... thanks for the tip on the bobber..my kit is built on a larger pill bottle, and will benefit from the space... regards

I don't fly fish, but think one could use the closed coil to be used as a tip guide (bent at 90 degrees) to help smoothly strip line on an improvised pole... most often seen as a way to organize hooks (pin through the hook eye)....and may just be tradition... as a kid (late 50's) I received a Boker 155 knife and survival fishing kit out of a USAF survival kit, and there were safety pins in it...possibly just to attach hooks and flies so they wouldn't get loose and puncture the raft....regards

i don't Carry a specific fishing kit... But here are a few I've made our out of primtive supplies.. I've gotten some hits on both rigs.. But haven;t pulled anything in witht hem yet... also as a side note... (if you roll natural cordage up wet and leave it for a spell it will mold...

I have a set made of dogbane as well but haven;t take a pic of it yet.. but I think that will be the winner maybe when combined with a gorge hook.
