i've been thinking about getting a neck knife, but can't decide what to get. i have a couple of rat knives and love them but i think i want to try something different. i love rat but want to expand my collection, maybe a custom?

I have had an Izula for a few months now. I got the Izula Survival Kit.
At first I used it as a belt knife, was happy with it, but later I
decided to make it into a neck knife.

I have been VERY happy with having the Izula as a neck knife. It makes a GREAT backup knife.

Derrick at www.knivesshipfree.com is a great place to buy them from.
Great service, great prices.

As far as a custom neck knife I would go with:

http://www.ctfischerknives.com/

He has a 3 inch compact knife, with sheath, 1/8 inch., approx. weight 3 oz.

Again, GREAT service, quality and pricing all at ONE stop.

Tell them Marko from the IntoTheWoodsBook Project sent you.

Here is my current one.....

Scott Gossman makes some nice knives.
Check him out on the sub forum. The Psk series can be utilized as a necker. Here is my Mini-Tusker in A2.

Swamp Rat is planning to release a run of Rat Shakers. You would need to get a necker sheath made for it, but it's a good knife.

Scott Gossman makes a great necker if you're looking for a custom. My top three include Fallkniven's WM-1, the now defunct REKAT Hobbit's Fang as well as a no-longer made Running Dog knive's necker (it's the cord wrapped handled one). I must admit, I typically carry my WM-1 in a MercHarness instead of traditional neck carry.

That is quite a collection, RJ Martin Handi-man, Running Dog, REKAT Neck Fang, Original Camillus BK11, Buck Kaala, A.G. Russell Woodswalker, BM Tether Knife, Emerson LaGriffe, Buck Hartsook Ultralite,

and

What is the story with that MercHarness, is it worth buying as opposed to just making one?

My fav right now is my Bark River Bravo necker, some of its nicer features are that it is stainless steel, has a full convex blade, pollished uncoated cutting surface, comes in a multitude of color options, and has optional removable handle scales, and the sheath holds a firesteel.

^^ This is the scarry-sharpest knife I've ever seen!!

For the money the Becker Necker BK11 is a great deal for around $30, pluss you can get the optional TDI belt clip that will allow you to clip it anywear on your person...

First, I must say that the Bravo Necker is a sweet piece which BryFry posted:thumbup:

You could easily make an equivalent to the MercHarness, I just wanted to support the maker and give him some plugs as it's a great way to carry a neck-sized fixed blade. My reasoning was that I don't care for much around my neck due to my occupation. You can just make a big loop of 550-cord with the knife threaded thru and fold the 550-cord to make a figure-eight and slip it on...you might need a little shortening/lengthening to fit properly, but that's the basics.

I understand supporting small business. I am one of them.

I was just wondering. I carry a Spyderco Perrin the very way you described...

I've been using my Kalista for a "woods" blade off and on for a couple years now. After I cleaned the coating off and polished it up it's quite a good little performer.

I can't imagine any mass produced knife comparing to what our local makers make.
