Solid shot and canister were fired to hit the ground in front of troops that way it would bounce through troops taking bits of people with it. It also kicked up stones, dirt and such that made matters worse. Exploding shells had paper fuses that were cut to certain times, i.e. 5 secs. These were lit by the process of firing the shot as fire would surround the ball or projectile lighting the fuse before it left the muzzle. Some percussion fuses were used but did not do too well during that time period.
