Lets Ask Chuck Buck to add the 112

No, I'm not kidding.

I don't kid. Ye Olde China Custom Shoppe would work.

Anybody with an IQ that's even close to three digits knows that fine knives can be made anywhere.

If they can be made at a reasonable cost and sold for a good profit at a reasonable price.....everybody wins.

All you need are talented people and high standards. Insist that they produce the best or no deal.

Test the knives to make sure they're the best.

This is not rocket science.

I have a collection of Spyderco Byrd knives that are all made in China, and the quality is excellent. I have no doubt that a Chinese 'Custom' could be done, however the real question is should they be done?

Other than the obvious exportation of American jobs to China, there is also the exporting of American technology and know-how to a foreign, Communist country, a country that is daily committing industrial espionage against western nations and particularly against the US. Should Crucible share it's steel technology with China, so steel doesn't have to be transported from N.America? Should Buck hand over skills and techniques that have been learned for generations? I don't think so.

I have no beef with high quality Chinese products. Both Buck and Spyderco have outsourced some of their less expensive knives to China, so they can maintain a profitable niche in the marketplace. Fair enough, but the day I see a 110 or a Military made in China, is the day I start selling production knives.

I would venture to say that most of us here think that is exactly what the good folks at Post Falls are currently attempting to do, and doing very well in most cases!!

Well, A.P.F., you will note that I never suggested the knives be made in China.....in the proposed "Ye Olde China Custom Shoppe," only the most labor intensive handcrafting work would be done there and the final touches would be done in Idaho.

It would be a collaborative effort of master craftsmen (and women) from both nations.

It wouldn't take any American jobs because that kind of work can't be done profitably on a large scale in America anyway......the labor is just too high-priced.

Since I don't suffer from commie-phobia (I think normal people got over that in the seventies) I'm not worried about the commies using secret knife technology to conquer and enslave us.

You may be correct that farming out the repair and warranty work would take at least some American jobs, though.

The warranty work is highly UNprofitable and farming it out might be the price Buck has to pay to stay in business......it also might be that a more profitable Buck Company could end up providing a net gain in jobs here in America.

The discussion is about adding more options to the Custom Shoppe menu, not the regular production.

Again, read more carefully and try to keep up.

;)

Hey, I never got over commie-phobia! In fact, I was a 'cold warrior' in the 70's, serving in Her Majesty's Canadian Armed Forces, so I earned my phobia. ;)

As for technology, I was thinking more along the lines of CNC machining and proprietary steel formulas, applications that can be applied to weapons systems, etc. I don't know what level of technology that Buck uses in it's machinery, so the above is just conjecture on my part.

I understand what you're saying and I agree that it makes perfect sense.

Having said that....

Under no circumstance will I ever buy a Buck knife made in china.

There is a sub-forum for politics already on BF, and this ain't it.

:D

Now, back to 112's!

I wanna see more stuff like this.

I've said before that the only addition I think would make sense from Buck's perspective is to add the 119 as the fixed blade option. That way the most popular fixed blade and folder are custom options.
======================================================

Custom shoppe 119s...Got my VOTE !!

ahhh much good discision here...

There ARE those at buck that share our passion for customs of all kinds
i will encourage many of you to post in that custom dreaming thread..
in my discussions with some at buck it was brought up many times they did not have time to look for everything said on customs shop desires..

i know and agree with discussion in any thread to bring up desire of a custom in any model... jest dont forget they will not always see it..
again emails will go a long way to letting them know what you want!!
there are those that want to supply it to you they jest need to know..

commie's ... yes if we dont still fear them as any radical's we will pay sooner or later...
i feel food cost here will go down if we embargo or place very low limits on food exports!!!
we can share a ride to the store ... can they grow enough food ?

If we cant get a custom 112 for a while Chuck, how about ANY confereration 112 with BG42 or SV-30 blade ????????????? ITS ALL ABOUT THE STEEL

Exactly bucksway!! I'd be delighted in a standard issue 112 with either of those steel choices and/or 154cm. Well said! How about it Mr. Buck? A sprint run with one or both of your current premium steels a possiblity?

here again custom can be choice of handle inlay also brass or nickel choice..
and here again one persons safe queen can be another's well warn user!

an that is one NICE custom 112!!!
not that shows buck did do some !!!
so it is not an orphaned model , see!
now what more do you want?
go seak and ye shall find them !

You saw the picture of my new damascus and stag 112? I just bought that from hkingdom along with a 1972 pre-dot 112 with a sequa scales. The 112 collestion is improving by the day.

My first choice if it was available would be:
1. S30V, Amber bone, & nickel silver bolsters
2. S30V, Stag/Elk, & nickel silver bolsters
3. 154cm, walnut, & niclel silver bolsters
4. 154cm, picked brown bone, brass bolsters.

But mostly I want plain old 112 in premium steel to lug around in my pocket.

Chuck, I feel sure that even as many as 1,000 112s made with BG42 or SV30 would be a super fast seller even without fancy dress'en up !!!!! Hey Guys, would you send Chuck $75.00 for one??? I would have to get 3-4 right away ! One factory stock for my 112 collection, one or two sent out to be dressed up for the same, and one to EDC...That one I would send to Dave to be made into a 112 "Rubber Bucky"... Heck if you had one with NS,Koa or any burl ,finger grouves I would be Glad to send ya $150.00 Hey!!! Start a series with all SUPER STEELS ! Sir, it would be a joy to send your company money!

I'm with the "sprint run 112 & custom shoppe 119" crowd. Since the 112 is fairly similar to the 110 in form and function, I think that adding a customizable fixed blade to the Buck custom line-up makes the most sense. In fact, when I first went to Buck's web site some years ago, I was surprised the 119 wasn't part of their custom shop.

I'd love to see a sprint of 112's with some kind of premium steel - BG42, CPM 154 or S30V; the handle and bolster material are secondary to me.

Add the 119 to the custom shop so prospective Buck users can have a custom Buck folding knife AND a custom Buck fixed blade, the best of both worlds.
