Let's do a fun project together!

Surry guys. In sad to announce I am going to sideline this project. The head doesn't want to hang. I have other projects to work on and can't spend all my time dicking with this angry axe head. I have put her on the wall of Shame with all the other axes that have pissed me off, made me bleed, or just all around suck. I will get back to get one day soon.

Drilling the inside hole doesn't receive any pressure but that's what I have done. Then insert a Philips screw turner ave rock it around to loosen. With a step wedge they pop when you get your flat screw turner to engage the first step.

The idea is not to relieve the pressure but to make space for the easy out. I've not tried this though, never had one to rehang with those round wedges.

Are you talking about using a threaded puller of some kind?

Yeah, its this thing like a tap with a steep taper and left hand twist. Designed to be inserted in a hole drilled down a busted bolt and grab the bolt well enough to unscrew it.

You should finish up this project. Light heads on long handles make for fantastic limbing axes and if you do any camping they beat a 14" scout hatchet in my experience. You'll want to thin out that handle extensively, it should be easier to hang once you've done so and safer to use.

Skip to about half way through to bypass my ramblings and see what I'm mean about limbing.

As for metal wedges, I try to avoid using them at all costs. I'll replace a wood wedge before I drive in a metal one personally. I can only imagine how hard it is to pull a circular one

Oh it will get done, just not going to work on it every night until it's done like most of my projects. And I was thinking out would make a good looking axe as I was going to thin the handle down a good bit.

Wait a minute. You touted this as a "lets-do-a-fun project" thread, devoted more time to taking pictures and submitting posts than actually doing anything more than cursory rasping and fitting, and now you're throwing in the towel! Check out COTS (City of the South) extensive handle-making project thread if you need inspiration and motivation. He doesn't give up after 10 minutes.

For the cylindrical wedges, why not drill out the wood inside and then use a large easy out to pull the wedge?

If you really wanted to get fancy then after drilling out the center you could tap it for a heilcoil. Then screwing a bolt thru the helicoil would pull the wedge.

I figure the easy out is the way to go, since they are good for nothing else :D

They are designed for turning as Jim notes, but I figure as it turned the pressure on it from the surrounding wood might just push it up a bit.

Now I'm curious, going to have to go tear apart the one framing hammer I have that has those things in it.

Muh wedges and files are about the only thing I have organized.
So the new drift is skookum. I have found that you can't end finish the head or the handle. If you did you always bugger one or the other. So now that the head of flush with the halft it's time to thin the handle. We had a bit of a mishap. A chunk had split on the handle swell which is why it was cut off the axe. Another split showed up while hanging so I had to cut the whole thing back.

Sidebar time. I have been using cutting board for years to as vise blocks. This was a board I get the other day when I broke a few old blocks. $2 at the thrift store and it's more durable than wood. Also much cheaper than soft jaws for your vise.
Let's make an edge gauge.

Rough cut with your coping saw and finish with a half round jewellers file.

The reason I am posting all this make your own tool stuff is that you can't just buy it at the home despot and what the internet guys want for these things is ridiculous. For a few bucks and some know how you can make all the specialty tools you need.
