Let's hear from the lurkers

I have been busy recently, but have been currently "saving" a vintage True Temper.

By the way my name is Damian if anyone didn't know.

My main focus as it pertains to this forum are axes, never owned many hawks.

I use axes for trail clearing and buscraft, as well as various applications around the
property.

I see my axes as tools and everyone one of them gets used.

Hey Damian, thanks for posting, I'm working on a True temper "black prince" a Canadian make hatchet. Maybe you could post pics when you're finished, we'd all enjoy seeing it.

Best regards

Robin

Why dont you let me take the Black Prince off your hands and finish it for you??

Hi all, what a great forum this is with so much knowledge. We have folks here who are makers, experts on survival, leatherwork, history, axes, hawks and hatchets. The threads get many hits. Lets hear from all you lurkers, lets see your gear. Ask questions of the fiends who hang around here. I'm going to do a sheath WIP progress, maybe some of the others who make stuff can do the same. Not ranting here folks just like to see this forum grow.:D

Very best regards

Robin

+1 It has been great to see this forum grow, and I hope it continues to do so. Can't wait for your sheath WIP thread!

I've lurked for a while and finally started posting some recently. I collect and use old tools, especially axes and hatchets, and it is nice to find other people who like some of the same things.

My name is Jason, my main interest is knives and sharpening. I never really had interest in hawks or axes until a few months ago when suddenly I had the urge for a hawk. I think it started after seeing a custom hawk in one of the threads around here, it was a breathtaking piece and for whatever reason completely changed my perspective on the hawk.

For X-mas this year my brother and I decided to gife each other CS Vietnam tomahawks (he caught the bug too). We were going to go with the original Vtacs but choose the CS for moddability. We stripped the green paint, sanded the surface and rounded the edges, sharpened, patina via lemon, flamed the handles, and I had forum member rayban do a leather wrap to the handle. I plan on doing some throwing for fun and testing it as a camp tool this summer. I probably didn't pick the best hawk for the job but liked the designs history and style, small size was a big factor too.

I have been meaning to post some finished pic's, I'll try and get some up later today.

Fellas,
Jon here. I am mostly a lurker here on the forums, but i have a great appreciation for hawks, knives, and axes. I just recently purchased a Craig Barr hawk and plan on doing some testing this weekend up north. I will post some pics if i remember to take a few.

I too hope to see this forum grow, and hopefully learn about other makers and mods by the forumites.

Hey Jon, thanks for posting and congrats on your Barr hawk, he does very nice work. We'd all like to see pics of your testing.

Best regards

Greets all. My name is Roland, my forge is "The Snake River IronWorks". I WAS primarily an ornimental blacksmith till the economy took a dive. Never did want to make bladed objects because there were so many excellent bladesmith's out there, but again, the economy dictates directions doesn't it?! I've been making hawks, pipe, spike and poll out of ball pein hammers for the last few months and surprise, surprise...I love doing it. Came to this forum hoping to share tips and info.

Hi there Roland
welcome to the hawk forum and thanks for posting. That's a beautiful hawk, I'm sure you have a future in hawkmaking. Thanks for the pics of your great work.

Best regards

Pipeman, thanks for the compliment, your stuff is from a another time zone/planet....toocool !! I was a jeweler for 35 yrs, and am positive I don't want to aspire to your level of finish work (35 yrs of "close to perfect" is enough), I like making usin' hawks that don't have to be admired from a distance that can be roughed up and end up looking better for it. By the way, I agree, Craig Barr does excellent work!!

I too am a big lurker. I probably read about 99% of this sub-forum, and i have also noticed that there have been much more hits and replies recently.

I originally joined bladeforums for the knives, but now i only read this sub-forum, and the Wilderness and Survival sub-forum; and i must say, i there is a lot of very useful information.

I unfortunately only own a Wetterlings Large Hunters axe (which i love), but i plan on expanding my collection soon. Especially when the Council Tool Velvicut line comes out.

Thanks for posting folks. This is a great forum and it is growing. More people are getting in to hawks and axes every day.

Best regards

Robin

I lurk here a little bit. I own a smallish Wetterlings Hunters axe and a couple of Cold Steel tomahawks. One is a nib old style (no set screw) norse hawk, and the other one is a Trail Hawk. The trail hawk I modded a bit. First I stripped off the paint with a wire wheel, then I hand sanded it a little. I also thinned out the edge and wrapped the handle with some 550 cord. Then I threw it into a tree at my Mothers house in the woods and left it there for the winter :( (the tree is due to be taken out soon to prevent it from falling on her home)

I have also started lurking here. I've learned a lot in the last couple of months since I started poring through the threads here. There are sure a lot of talented craftsmen, and a lot of knowledge being shared here!

I came to BFC mainly due to my interest in switchblades (not a very active sub-forum), which was a relatively new interest at the time. I've since expanded my forum browsing to Traditionals, which I've always loved and owned. And now to this fine subforum, as well as the Wilderness and Survival subforum, and Maintenance and Tinkering. The sickness seems to be growing!

I have a few hatchets, which I've loved since I was a kid and my dad let me chop branches and stuff. I only have one axe (a hardware store special) and a maul (which currently needs re-handling). What drew me here was the great video by IA Woodsman on the versatility of the Trailhawk. I soon had one which I modded, and which I have played with a bit here and there. Since Spring has sprung, I will be doing a lot more playing with it in the woods.

I love to tinker (mangle) knives and blades, and am always looking for excuses to buy them, use them, and modify them. My wife would say that my interest in the outdoors may just be an excuse to take my knives and machetes and hatchets and saws into the woods to play- and she may be right!

My real name is nobody's business because I'm the official Troll Target™ of Bladeforums.

I'm a flintknapper and I make the occasional war club.

i'll bite! i have no idea how i stumbled on modified tomahawks but i have been hooked ever since seeing the work from some of you guys on here! so i think to myself, i can do that! ordered a spike and a trail. went at it great guns with no knowledge and all the wrong tools. jumped in way over my head! going for a mirror polished, heavily etched choppa' . well it has been a great experience and i imagine i will get it finished (it's for a friend) sooner or later. will post pics of work in progress or wait 'till the end.
i want to thank you all for the inspiration and education but mostly, i want to thank you for this new Addiction!
