I used to have more, but recently focused on narrowing down my collection to reduce duplication. These four splitback whittlers are the ones I decided were worth keeping.
Left to Right, they are:
- GEC 133317
- 2009 Canal Street (I believe the blades on this one were supplied to CSC from Queen, based on stories I’ve heard and the look of the blades. I could be wrong though.)
- 1989 Winchester “black box” 3971
- E.C. Simmons “Keen Kutter” whittler from somewhere in the late 1920s to early 1930s. Possibly made by Camillus.
And here’s a few pics of how well the blades all nest together, and how the spring wedges taper down on each.
Personally, I consider the blade configuration on the CSC (clip main with a spear and coping secondaries) to be most useful. I also am very impressed with the fit and finish on this one. However, the GEC 13 has a certain charm, and the Winchester is special to for me as a “birth-year knife”. And of course, the Keen Kutter is cool as a “survivor”. Fun to imagine the things that knife has experienced.
I enjoy most all splitback whittlers, as a joining of complex construction, useful blades, and a pocket-friendly package. It’s fun to see how different makers handle them. Love seeing all the pictures in this thread!
