Let's not split hairs here, let's split backs! - Post your whittlers

I brought this back from a 2016 post that PB bombed.

Figured I'd add a few whittlers to the thread.
Here's a couple from Canal Street,

Here are a few I had pictures of. A whittler purist would not consider the ones with file blades to be true whittlers. But, to me, any knife with the whittler blade configuration is called a whittler (or, for the small ones, a pen knife with blades in a whittler configuration).

I used to have more, but recently focused on narrowing down my collection to reduce duplication. These four splitback whittlers are the ones I decided were worth keeping.

Left to Right, they are:

- GEC 133317
- 2009 Canal Street (I believe the blades on this one were supplied to CSC from Queen, based on stories I’ve heard and the look of the blades. I could be wrong though.)
- 1989 Winchester “black box” 3971
- E.C. Simmons “Keen Kutter” whittler from somewhere in the late 1920s to early 1930s. Possibly made by Camillus.

And here’s a few pics of how well the blades all nest together, and how the spring wedges taper down on each.

Personally, I consider the blade configuration on the CSC (clip main with a spear and coping secondaries) to be most useful. I also am very impressed with the fit and finish on this one. However, the GEC 13 has a certain charm, and the Winchester is special to for me as a “birth-year knife”. And of course, the Keen Kutter is cool as a “survivor”. Fun to imagine the things that knife has experienced.

I enjoy most all splitback whittlers, as a joining of complex construction, useful blades, and a pocket-friendly package. It’s fun to see how different makers handle them. Love seeing all the pictures in this thread!

This is my new thing and I was pleased to find this thread. I may have a couple coming as well 😂. Here is a Case 6380, Winchester 3971, and a GEC 38 Grinling. All three of these knives are excellent. I really like how well these knives are built and made. I’m a sucker for a clip point main blade on this design.
