Let's See Equal End Knives

camp_3_f.jpg

This one is marked MADE IN USA only. No brand name.

Thawk,
That one was probably made for the military before or around the start of WWII.
At least that is what I have gathered from reading Michael Silvey.

There are some wonderful Camp/scout/utility knives showing up here! Hal, I enjoyed hearing about you actually opening a can with that scary looking opener!
At the risk of looking like a showoff (who me??), I am posting these group scans that I made a little while ago, of EE knives.
First the little guys at 3 1/8";

Here is a photo of my Kingston that Larry V. helped me identify as being patterned after an Ulster 4518 from the 30's.
Keith

Keith - I think your Kingston may be a much nicer example of my 60 year old camp knife I use in the kitchen when my two year old hand crank opener shot craps after 2 years.

Charlie - Awesome  scans of your equal ends. Glad you enjoyed that I use the knife. That little nub on the can opener blade rides on the rim of the can to make sure you stay the course.

ILLUSTRATION A-1

How is that for an action shot finishing off the big can of chicken and noodles? Here is the pre WWII Camp knife, proudly resting on top of the can after another job well done.

Note fresh soup on the cutting blade. Patina is OK to dip in food that will be cooked, right?

What's a little patina to a knife collector?? You absorb more through your skin than will ever dissolve in your soup! Still almost none!!
Nice to see you are skipping the trans-fats!!!:D

Next size up, 3 3/8".
You've seen the 4 blade up above.

WOW, what a GREAT thread.
including Ulster Knife Co/Ulster/Kingston/SCC/S-W/ New York Knife Co/Walden Knife Co/Camillus & Imperial, i must have well over 100 equal end knives. BUT, they are in the safe at my "country home", but i's not. can't even get in with 4WD & chains. so i can't show off what i've been so busy at (collecting the oldies). it'll be 2 months before i can get other than ski in access.
was really hard to leave my knives behind, but i would need a bigger vehicle to pack them in anyway ! this knife collecting can get out-of-hand eh ?

Here is another equal end.

ULSTER/KNIFE CO/N.Y. is the tang stamp on the small blade.
The main blade is stamped: WRIGHT &/WILHELMY/CO.

Obviously a contract knife.
I thought it was cool.

Nice one Dale, I love those pearls!! I show that company out of Omaha, NE, c1902 to present under that name according to Levines. Knives were made by Boker and Ulster. I love those old contract knives, really shows the reach these cutleries had:thumbup:

Charlie, I think I'm going to start rotating your images as screensavers:thumbup::thumbup::D

Hal, very cool opener tutorial!

You thought right, Dale!! Very cool! Makes you wonder how many unknown companies Ulster contracted to????? I wonder if they were as prolific as Camillus, and Empire!!

I wonder too.

In the hey-day of the old fashion hardware stores there were a lot of contract knives.
That was back in the day when a pocketknife was a tool & every man & boy worth his salt carried one.
You could walk into any hardware store in any small town and find nice knives.
Makes me long for the good days. :D

I did some research on Wright & Wilhelmy. They were a hardware supplier & were bought out in 2006 (IIRC) by another company. It looks like , from the web sites, that there is still a Wright & Wilhelmy, but they are a regional distributor around Omaha.

Here are a few more.

Some equal end pen knives:

left to right - top to bottom they are:
Camco - Camillus
Imperial - Schrade
NYK Hammer Brand - Ulster

Top to Bottom:
Imperial
Imperial
ISC (Imperial Schrade Corp) made in Germany. It's very sharp.

Imperial - a shell handle, but kind of neat.
Kent (by Camillus for Woolworth's)
NYK Hammer Brand
Schrade Cut Co

OK guys start digging. I think I am almost out. I will have to dig to find any more.

Yowza! Ain't we got knives! Lookit all them beauties!! Eric, the sentiment is mutual re; wallpaper. We all wanna see what the next knife might be!
Here are the next largest ones in my bunch. Slightly larger than 3 5/8", I think that is their nominal length, or, my ruler was short:D!

Here are my meager contributions to this great thread. All three Ulsters. There are some beautiful knives posted here, everybody!

There are some knives to die for in this thread!! Some I haven't seen before, and would love to see up close and personal!! Thanks everyone!!
Time to pop this thread back up with another pic! Here are my big boys, 4 1/4" makes a nice handful of Equal-ender. My favorite is the one with the flat beveled bolsters. I have been told by knife makers, it is the hardest one to finish correctly.

Charlie, you have a museum quality of these knives, so much breadth in your displays. and Eric, what's the knife in the first of your pics above: 3 blade(one a manicure), jigged bone ? i really like that kind of knife and that is a unique example.
