Lets see opinels - Pic Thread

Yea that's a no go on me, haven't seen any other sheaths quite as nice ass that one. I wonder if they have just as many sheaths as knives or if they order them from some other company.

If I find an adress for them, i'll write and ask.

Now I have something to look up tomorrow lol.

It's not a big deal to make one yourself. Not an Opinel in this picture, but I have several of those sheaths and have carried also Opinels in similar self made pocket sheaths. Just a piece of leather, suitable cord, a needle and a punch are needed. Pliers made to make holes in leather is a big help. Some contact cement is usefull. The time needed to make this sheath is about one hour. It is a good idea to wet the leather slightly, then wrap the knife in plastic and wrap leather over the knife, put some glue on the edges, use clothespins to hold the edges together. You can mold the wet leather as it dries. Make the holes for cord. After the leather is dry you just sew. Done.

Very nice, HFinn - I really like that!
(And thanks for the informative how-to  )

It does sound easy, thanks. I have an 8 that could use a little snugger fit and the 1890 does look interesting. Nice to know there is an easy fix.

It's an easy fix alright, and I don't think it's by accident.

Remember, these knives are sold to and used by farmers, ditch diggers, and laborers of all types as a cheap working blade. They get used very hard, by non knife nuts who don't care a hoot about knives but need one. I've noticed that the Opinel, Douk-Douk, German Mercator k55, and some other knives that are working mans cutlery, all have the exposed pivot pin that is easy to snug up. Imagine out in the field, or on a construction site, it is an easy and fast matter to take two hammers, or a hammer and a rock under it as an anvil, and in a few seconds snug up the pivot on your knife. Bada bing, bada boom, it's done.

A working mans tool, made to be tuned in the field or on the job site.:D

Thanks. It's a bit more refined than the Opinel. Nice wood, flats on the handle sides, and an adjustable pivot. I wish the blade were carbon, but the stainless is good. I *think* that they're no longer made, but I see them for sale sometimes. I bought it from Vince a few years ago and it's done light duty as a picnic knife.

My favourite Opi is starting to develop a nice patina after I had polished it to a certain degree. I'm not planning on removing it. I quite like it. Every time I eat with it, or prep food with it, it looks a bit different.

I like that bit on the side there and that Le Marjacq does look pretty nice too

Here's a group shot of the Opi's with the newest member, a #6 Carbone, nice small folder, competes with the Olivewood burl in front but didn't really have a chance, that burl is just so nice ;)

Now the Carbone #6 was very tight, which is ok, but tuff to open, I had picked up some Extreme Fluoro off of Amazon, it's labeled as Pure Fluorinated Pfpae grease and one application down in there made it open a lot easier. Normally I just use some petroleum jelly but that wasn't touching it, but this stuff worked slick, pun intended ;)

Around the group we have,
Back row left
#12 Carbone
#10 Inox
#9 Inox

Front row left
#6 Carbone
#8 Ebony...nice!
#8 Ebony Slim...really nice!
#8 Garden, a good work horse of a folder
And in the front row
#6 Inox Olive Wood Burl

I'm waiting for an email for a #8 Olive wood burl, but it may be a long time before they get any of those in :(

Nice collection Gary! I have been using my carbon 10 lately. Big for EDC but fun around the house/field.

I actually take mine tight with some of this grease

It makes the pivots feel like a 500 dollar knife. I don't even enjoy opening my slipjoints anymore its so good.

Its just a light viscosity mineral oil based no. 1 grease. My father is a lube specialist he always gets me new (to me) lubes to try. I have not found better than this jar.

Thanks Kevin, that looks like good stuff too !

Every time I go to cut stuff, it just makes me smile, basically like a box cutter but with some style, those thin blades do love to slice...my left arm hasn't had any hair for a long time, it's starting to look a lot like the top of my head !!!

HAHA, I know what you mean. We can get any knife this sharp its just these are SO EASY to get SO SHARP :)

Yeah, I was just thinking great minds think alike with the grease :)

Hey Kevin, we use that a lot here at the factory (I'm at work). Thanks for the heads up! I'll give it a shot.

Your very welcome, Anthony! Its funny when something more common works better than some of the more expensive knife specific lubes I have tried :)

I have had this #7 for about 25 years, hadn't seen use for a while so it's been in pocket for about the last two weeks. I'm enjoying it a lot more after a few simple mods I just did. I dropped the point, sanded down top side of the handle butt, tightened the pin and sealed the end with melted paraffin to water proof. I like it so much more now!
